Chapter 14 - I Chose Which Name to Use

The decision was mine.

That mattered.

Vale didn’t order me.

Laura didn’t pressure me.

Caleb asked once whether I wanted advice.

I said no.

Then spent an entire night awake.

Hannah Reed had friends.

A job.

A favorite booth at the diner.

A landlord who complained about my boots in winter.

A life built from ordinary details.

Evelyn Hart had Ranger.

Mason.

Laura.

Vale.

An unfinished mission.

I used to think one identity had to destroy the other.

That was the trap.

The next morning, I agreed to testify under my real name in protected proceedings.

Not because Evelyn deserved resurrection.

Because I deserved ownership over her.

The formal exposure of Vaughn’s conduct began through proper channels.

Investigators confronted records.

Access logs.

Recovered equipment.

Financial connections.

Witness testimony.

Vaughn denied wrongdoing.

Then changed parts of his story when specific records contradicted him.

No dramatic confession.

No immediate final judgment.

Just the beginning of accountability he could no longer avoid.

Laura accepted her own legal scrutiny.

Vale faced an internal review over decisions he had made while protecting survivors and managing classified records.

Caleb returned Ranger to regular duty.

And I went back to Maine.

Donna stared at me when I walked into the diner.

“You done being mysterious?”

“No.”

“Good. Table six needs coffee.”

That was the closest thing to normal I could have asked for.

Then Caleb entered with Ranger.

The dog saw me.

Stopped.

I didn’t signal him.

Caleb gave the command.

Ranger looked between us.

Then obeyed Caleb.

Perfectly.

That hurt.

And relieved me.

The dog remembered me.

May you like

But he had learned how to continue without me.

Maybe I needed to do the same.
