Chapter 10 - Vanessa Runs

Vanessa was found that afternoon.

Not at the airport.

At Warren Pierce’s lake house.

Police approached quietly.

Pierce surrendered immediately.

Vanessa did not.

She locked herself inside his office and attempted to burn papers in the fireplace.

Officers entered before she could destroy everything.

The certified codicil survived with scorched edges.

The recorder did not.

Vanessa had smashed it.

But forensic technicians recovered the internal storage.

More importantly, Pierce began talking.

He had no loyalty once criminal charges became real.

For six years, Margaret used him to divert small amounts from Carter-controlled charitable accounts.

Never enough at once to trigger obvious alarms.

Millions over time.

Thomas discovered it.

Rachel discovered it.

Then Thomas changed the trust.

Pierce admitted helping Margaret pressure Arthur Brennan after Thomas died.

He admitted creating Carter Heritage Consulting.

He admitted paying Arthur.

Then detectives asked the question everyone feared.

“What happened the night Thomas Carter died?”

Pierce went silent.

Finally, he said, “I wasn’t there.”

“But?”

“Margaret called me afterward.”

Daniel’s hands tightened.

“What did she say?”

Pierce looked toward his attorney.

“She said Thomas had forced her hand.”

The room went still.

“Exact words?”

Pierce swallowed.

“She said, ‘He chose that child over me, so I made sure he couldn’t sign anything else.’”

Daniel shut his eyes.

Pierce insisted Margaret never explicitly admitted poisoning Thomas.

But prosecutors now had motive, financial conspiracy, the medication purchase, Emily’s observation, the suspicious recording, and Pierce’s testimony.

Then hospital toxicology returned.

Thomas’s preserved blood sample contained a concentration of medication inconsistent with his prescriptions.

Combined with his heart medication, it could have triggered the fatal event.

The death investigation officially became a homicide investigation.

Daniel sat alone when Sofia delivered the news.

He had spent nearly two years believing death and tragedy had simply attacked his family.

Rachel’s accident.

Thomas’s stroke.

His own loneliness.

Vanessa entering his life.

None of it had been random.

It had been engineered.

Rachel came into the room.

Daniel looked up.

“I married her.”

Rachel said nothing.

“I let the woman who helped destroy our family sleep under the same roof as Lily.”

“You didn’t know.”

“I should have.”

Rachel sat beside him.

“You know now.”

That mattered.

Because Daniel could no longer change the years behind him.

Only what happened next.

Margaret was taken into custody that evening.

Vanessa followed.

Neither went quietly.

But when Lily saw the police cars leaving, she asked only one question.

“Are the mean ladies coming back?”

Daniel knelt and held her.

May you like

“No.”

For the first time, he could say it and mean it.
