Chapter 13 - The Trial
The courtroom was packed.
Margaret entered in a navy suit and pearls.
Still elegant.
Still controlled.
But no longer powerful.
Vanessa sat separately under advice from her own attorney.
The two women who once operated like partners barely looked at each other.
The prosecution began with money.
Then coercion.
Then Rachel’s disappearance.
Finally, Thomas.
Emily testified.
Arthur testified.
Warren Pierce testified.
Rachel testified for almost four hours.
She described leaving Lily because she believed it was the only way to keep her alive.
Margaret stared at her without expression.
Then Daniel took the stand.
The defense tried to portray him as an angry son seeking revenge.
They brought up the dining room.
His loss of control.
His confrontation with Margaret.
Daniel didn’t deny it.
“I was wrong to lose control,” he said. “I was terrified and furious after seeing my daughter hurt. But my actions that night don’t erase what was done to Lily before I walked into that room.”
That honesty mattered.
He wasn’t asking the jury to see him as perfect.
Only to look at the evidence.
Then, during a recess, Rachel brought Lily through a private courthouse corridor to meet Daniel.
Margaret was being escorted past at the same moment.
Lily saw her.
The toddler froze.
Then immediately hid behind Rachel’s legs.
Margaret stopped walking.
For a fraction of a second, something appeared in her face.
Not remorse exactly.
Recognition.
This child feared her.
Her own granddaughter.
Margaret opened her mouth.
Lily whispered, “No.”
One word.
Margaret’s shoulders seemed to drop.
The deputies moved her on.
That afternoon, prosecutors played the rabbit video.
Margaret leaning over the crib.
“Your grandfather should never have chosen you.”
The jury watched.
No one looked away.
Then came Pierce’s testimony about the phone call after Thomas died.
Then the toxicology evidence.
The defense attacked every piece.
But together, they formed a line too straight to ignore.
Thomas discovered theft.
Thomas changed the trust.
Rachel was threatened.
Rachel disappeared.
Thomas died.
The codicil vanished.
Margaret took financial control.
Vanessa married Daniel.
Lily became the next target.
A family tragedy had not unfolded naturally.
It had been designed.
The jury deliberated for two days.
