Chapter 9 - The Rabbit Camera

Emily started using the rabbit after Vanessa fired her.

Before leaving, she had placed a small motion camera inside the toy because she feared Lily would be left alone with Vanessa.

The battery lasted only a few days.

But it captured enough.

On the first video, Vanessa entered Lily’s bedroom after Daniel left for Chicago.

She locked the door.

Margaret followed.

Lily stood in her crib.

Vanessa held one of Thomas’s old envelopes.

Margaret demanded to know where Rachel had hidden the certified trust document.

Of course Lily didn’t understand.

She was barely two.

Margaret searched drawers.

Vanessa emptied toy baskets.

Then Margaret said:

“Rachel must have left something with the child before she ran.”

Vanessa replied:

“And if Daniel ever learns Rachel’s alive?”

Margaret stared directly toward the crib.

“He won’t.”

Rachel closed her eyes when she heard it.

The second video was worse.

Vanessa deliberately tore Lily’s dress, smeared dirt on it, and photographed her.

Margaret instructed her to document “neglect.”

The guardianship case.

Built piece by piece.

Daniel stood so still Raymond worried he might collapse.

Then the third clip played.

Margaret was alone.

She leaned over Lily’s crib and whispered:

“Your grandfather should never have chosen you.”

That sentence erased any remaining ambiguity.

This had always been about Thomas’s decision.

Not Lily’s behavior.

Not Daniel’s parenting.

Power.

Raymond immediately duplicated the footage to multiple secure servers.

Vanessa could burn the codicil.

Destroy the recorder.

It no longer mattered.

Arthur had sworn testimony regarding the codicil.

Rachel had witnessed Thomas’s transfer.

The rabbit footage established motive and conspiracy.

And the recovered digital records connected everything.

At 6:10 a.m., state investigators arrived.

By then, police had located Vanessa’s car abandoned at a private airport outside White Plains.

She had purchased a ticket under another name.

But she hadn’t boarded.

Daniel knew why.

“She’s not running yet.”

Raymond agreed.

“She’s meeting someone.”

A review of Vanessa’s phone backups revealed repeated contact with Warren Pierce, Margaret’s longtime financial adviser.

Pierce controlled several shell entities used to move Carter money.

If Vanessa had the codicil and recorder, she might be trading them for cash and an escape route.

Police began searching.

Margaret was informed that she could no longer leave the estate voluntarily pending questioning.

For the first time, her composure cracked.

Then Rachel walked into the room.

Margaret stared at her.

Her lips parted.

“No.”

Rachel stopped ten feet away.

“Yes.”

Margaret actually stepped backward.

Daniel watched his mother look at the woman whose life she had stolen.

Rachel’s voice was calm.

“You told my husband I was dead.”

Margaret whispered, “You should have stayed gone.”

May you like

Daniel heard it.

So did the investigators standing in the hall.
