Chapter 8 - The Guardianship Plan

The petition had never been filed.

That made it worse.

It meant the plan was still developing.

The draft claimed Lily had severe behavioral problems.

It described Daniel as emotionally unstable after Rachel’s “death.”

It named Margaret Carter as temporary guardian.

And it contained a proposed supporting statement from Vanessa.

Daniel read each paragraph twice.

Fabricated tantrums.

Invented developmental concerns.

False claims that Lily hurt herself.

Suddenly every bruise had a second purpose.

They weren’t just cruelty.

They were evidence manufacturing.

Vanessa had been hurting Lily, then documenting the injuries as proof Lily was unstable in Daniel’s care.

Dr. Grant was furious when shown the draft.

“I never diagnosed any of this.”

Yet Vanessa’s notes cited the doctor repeatedly.

Margaret planned to use Daniel’s travel schedule against him.

Vanessa would testify that he was absent.

Margaret would present herself as the concerned grandmother.

Then, once Lily was legally separated from Daniel, they could pressure him to surrender control of certain Carter trust provisions in exchange for access to his daughter.

It was extortion disguised as family concern.

Rachel stared at the documents.

“They did the same thing to us.”

Daniel looked at her.

“What?”

“First make everyone believe a woman is unstable. Then control what happens to her child.”

Margaret had done it to Rachel.

Now she was adapting the strategy for Lily.

But there was one problem Margaret hadn’t anticipated.

Rachel was alive.

And as Lily’s biological mother, she could destroy the entire narrative in seconds.

Sofia Bennett, Daniel’s new family attorney, arrived that evening.

She reviewed the codicil, Rachel’s evidence, Emily’s recordings, Vanessa’s recovered messages, and the guardianship draft.

“This is no longer a family dispute,” she said.

Daniel nodded.

“I know.”

“We need law enforcement involved before Margaret realizes Rachel is here.”

Rachel looked toward Lily’s room.

“I want my daughter protected first.”

“She will be.”

They arranged for state investigators to meet at the estate the following morning.

But at 2:17 a.m., an alarm sounded.

One of the guest wing doors had opened.

Vanessa was gone.

Security footage showed her slipping through a service corridor wearing a housekeeper’s coat.

Margaret remained behind.

When Daniel confronted her, she didn’t look surprised.

“Where did Vanessa go?”

Margaret smiled.

“You should be asking what she took.”

Daniel ran upstairs.

Thomas’s study was open.

The certified codicil was gone.

So was Rachel’s recorder.

Vanessa had stolen the two strongest pieces of evidence.

But she had missed one thing.

Lily’s stuffed rabbit sat on the study chair.

Inside its fabric lining was a tiny memory card Emily had hidden weeks earlier.

And on that card was a video Vanessa never knew existed.
