Chapter 12 - Vanessa’s Last Lie

Vanessa requested a meeting from jail.
Daniel refused.
Then her attorney sent one sentence.
Rachel helped plan it.
Daniel stared at the message.
Rachel saw his face.
“What?”
He handed her the phone.
She read it and laughed once in disbelief.
“She’s desperate.”
Daniel believed that.
Mostly.
But trauma had made certainty harder.
Sofia advised them not to react emotionally.
“Vanessa wants division. That’s all she has left.”
Still, prosecutors had to investigate the allegation.
Vanessa claimed Rachel and Thomas had planned to frame Margaret for financial crimes so Rachel could eventually control the Carter fortune through Lily.
It sounded elaborate.
And convenient.
Vanessa produced printed emails supposedly exchanged between Rachel and Thomas.
The messages discussed “removing Margaret permanently.”
If authentic, they could complicate everything.
Rachel looked stunned.
“I never wrote those.”
Digital forensics examined them.
The timestamps were real.
The addresses existed.
For twelve tense hours, Daniel waited.
Then investigators discovered the flaw.
The emails had been created from a backup of Thomas’s old account after his death.
The recovery IP address traced back to the Carter estate.
Specifically, Vanessa’s laptop.
She had manufactured them months earlier as insurance.
Her last weapon collapsed.
Worse, by producing them through counsel, she gave investigators a path to another hidden folder.
Inside were draft scripts.
Fake witness statements.
Manufactured medical notes.
And a list labeled:
Possible narratives if Rachel returns.
Daniel nearly laughed at the arrogance.
They had prepared lies for everything.
Except exposure.
Vanessa’s attorney withdrew from representing her soon afterward, citing an irreparable breakdown in the attorney-client relationship.
Margaret’s defense team attacked Pierce’s credibility.
Then Arthur’s.
Then Emily’s.
Then Rachel’s.
But the evidence didn’t depend on any single witness.
That had been their mistake.
Too many lies required too many records.
Bank transfers.
Messages.
Videos.
Medical files.
Trust documents.
Security logs.
Every attempt to control the story created another piece of proof.
Meanwhile, Rachel moved into a guest cottage on the estate rather than immediately returning to Daniel’s bedroom.
They were not pretending two years apart could vanish.
They went slowly.
Breakfast with Lily.
Therapy.
Long conversations after bedtime.
Apologies.
Anger.
Grief.
Sometimes silence.
Daniel never asked Rachel to forgive him for believing she was dead.
Rachel never asked him to pretend marrying Vanessa hadn’t hurt.
They simply started telling each other the truth.
Every day.
May you like
It was less romantic than a reunion fantasy.
And far more real.
