Chapter 14 - The Price
Vanessa accepted a deal before the verdict.
Not out of remorse.
Out of fear.
She pleaded guilty to conspiracy, evidence tampering, child endangerment, financial fraud, and attempted interference with custody proceedings.
In exchange for a reduced sentence, she testified fully against Margaret.
She admitted Margaret introduced her to Daniel during his grief deliberately.
Admitted she intercepted calls.
Admitted helping create the fake death paperwork Daniel received.
Admitted abusing Lily to manufacture a future guardianship case.
Then the prosecutor asked the question Daniel could barely hear.
“Did Margaret Carter instruct you to harm Lily?”
Vanessa hesitated.
“Yes.”
Rachel closed her eyes.
Daniel’s hand tightened around hers.
“Her exact instruction?”
Vanessa looked at Margaret.
“She said, ‘Make Daniel believe that child is impossible to raise. Once he doubts himself, we control both of them.’”
Margaret’s face remained motionless.
But her eyes burned.
Then came the verdict.
Financial conspiracy: guilty.
Witness intimidation: guilty.
Custody-related fraud: guilty.
Abuse conspiracy: guilty.
Tampering: guilty.
On the homicide charge connected to Thomas, the jury convicted Margaret on the applicable lesser homicide offense supported by the evidence rather than the prosecution’s most serious theory.
Margaret finally cracked.
She turned toward Daniel.
“I built everything you have!”
Daniel stared at her.
“No. Dad built a company. You built a prison.”
“You would have nothing without me.”
“I have Lily.”
Margaret laughed bitterly.
“That child cost you your family.”
Rachel stood beside him.
Daniel looked at his mother.
“No. Lily showed me which people were never family at all.”
Margaret was taken away.
No applause.
No cinematic celebration.
Just the sound of handcuffs and a door closing.
Outside the courthouse, reporters shouted questions.
Daniel ignored them.
Rachel ignored them.
Lily was waiting in a secure room with Emily.
When Daniel entered, she ran toward him.
He dropped to his knees.
She wrapped her arms around his neck.
“Home?”
Daniel kissed her temple.
“Home.”
Rachel joined them.
Lily reached one hand toward her mother.
For a moment, the three of them simply held one another.

But justice, Daniel realized, was going to be everything they built after it.
