Chapter 7 - The Last Dinner

Thomas died after dinner.
That had always been the story.
Now Daniel reconstructed the night.
Margaret prepared his tea.
Thomas went to his study.
Twenty minutes later, she claimed she found him collapsed.
The medical examiner ruled stroke.
Thomas was seventy.
No autopsy had been requested.
Margaret insisted he hated hospitals and wanted a quick burial.
Daniel had been grieving Rachel.
He signed whatever his mother placed in front of him.
Rachel played the final minutes of Thomas’s recording.
Margaret’s voice was furious.
“You humiliated me.”
Thomas answered, “You did that yourself.”
“You’re giving everything to a child.”
“I’m protecting the family from you.”
Then a glass clinked.
Thomas coughed.
The recording continued another three minutes before ending abruptly.
It wasn’t proof of murder.
But it was enough for investigators to reopen questions around the death.
Especially after Raymond uncovered an old pharmacy receipt.
Two days before Thomas died, Margaret had collected medication prescribed to herself.
A drug known to create serious complications when combined with one of Thomas’s heart medications.
Again, not proof by itself.
But then Emily remembered something.
“The tea.”
Everyone turned.
“I saw Mrs. Carter crushing something at the kitchen counter that night. She said it was her vitamin.”
Daniel’s blood ran cold.
Investigators were notified immediately.
Thomas’s preserved medical samples were requested from the hospital system that treated him hours before death.
Margaret still didn’t know Rachel was back.
Neither did Vanessa.
Daniel kept both women confined to a guest wing under private security while legal counsel determined the safest way to remove them without risking evidence destruction.
Vanessa demanded explanations.
Margaret demanded a lawyer.
Daniel gave neither access to company systems.
Then Vanessa made a mistake.
She attempted to wipe her laptop remotely.
Raymond’s cybersecurity team blocked the deletion.
The recovery revealed hundreds of messages between Vanessa and Margaret.
At first, financial.
Then personal.
Vanessa had been reporting Daniel’s schedule for years.
She knew when he traveled.
When Lily was alone.
When Rachel contacted old friends.
One message from Margaret read:
Make the child miserable enough and Daniel will agree she needs boarding care later.
Vanessa replied:
He still worships her. We need something stronger.
The date?
Three days before the dining room attack.
Daniel had to walk out of the room.
Rachel followed.
“She’s two,” he whispered.
Rachel’s eyes filled.
“I know.”
“They were planning years ahead.”
“I know.”
Daniel covered his face.
Then Raymond entered holding Vanessa’s recovered deleted folder.
“There’s something else.”
Inside were photographs.
Lily sleeping.
Lily crying.
Lily alone in the garden.
