Chapter 15 - Because He Was Hungry

Silvio carried Ethan into the kitchen.

Mia followed.

The chef offered to prepare something elaborate.

Silvio shook his head.

He made lunch himself.

Poorly.

Bread.

Fruit.

Cheese.

A ridiculous sandwich cut unevenly because Ethan kept reaching for it before Silvio finished.

Mia laughed.

Ethan laughed because Mia did.

For several minutes, nobody spoke about courtrooms.

Trusts.

Grant.

Lucinda.

SUVs.

It was only lunch.

That simplicity hit Silvio harder than he expected.

The nightmare had begun with Ethan saying he was hungry.

Grant and Lucinda treated his need like an inconvenience.

Then like an opportunity.

Now Silvio watched his son eat with both hands and understood how far the family had come.

The children would know what happened someday.

Not every detail immediately.

Not the ugliest parts while they were too young.

But Silvio would never build their lives around lies.

When they were old enough, they would hear the truth in language they could understand.

Lucinda had been family.

She made dangerous choices.

Grant helped her.

Other adults stood up.

Evidence mattered.

Truth mattered.

And none of it was Ethan or Mia’s responsibility.

That final part mattered most.

Silvio carried guilt for not seeing the warning signs earlier.

Therapy taught him something difficult.

If guilt improved his behavior, it had value.

If guilt made every moment about his suffering, it became another burden his children would eventually feel responsible for carrying.

He refused to give them that burden.

So he changed instead.

Months turned into a year.

The trust audit recovered much of the stolen money through restitution, seized assets, and insurance claims.

What could not be recovered no longer mattered as much as Silvio once imagined.

Ethan and Mia were safe.

Their future remained secure.

Grant and Lucinda had lost the control they tried to steal.

The house became a home again.

But one legal matter remained.

Lucinda had filed an appeal regarding part of her sentence.

Silvio expected another round of anger.

Instead, he felt almost nothing.

Her future belonged to the courts now.
