Chapter 7 - Twelve Seconds
The video changed everything.
Lucinda’s attorneys had claimed she believed the children were with a nanny.
The recording made that impossible.
The timestamp began four minutes after the SUV door closed.
Lucinda stood behind an upstairs window.
The camera zoomed toward the black vehicle.
No sound.
No explanation.
Just twelve seconds of deliberate observation.
Then the recording stopped.
Metadata showed she sent it to Grant.
The accompanying message had been deleted.
His phone backup still contained it.
She had asked whether they should wait longer.
Grant answered yes.
That was enough.
The prosecution shifted from investigating a reckless stunt to examining deliberate child endangerment and conspiracy.
Grant stopped talking.
Lucinda blamed him.
Each hired separate attorneys.
Their partnership began cracking immediately.
Grant insisted Lucinda designed the custody plan.
Lucinda insisted Grant controlled the timing and technology.
Both were partly telling the truth.
Neither was innocent.
Then Silvio’s attorneys uncovered another financial connection.
The attorney Lucinda consulted about emergency guardianship had never agreed to participate in anything illegal.
Lucinda had lied to him.
She described Silvio as increasingly confused.
She claimed he had forgotten Ethan in a parked vehicle once before.
That event had never happened.
She was establishing a paper trail before staging the incident.
The attorney had retained his intake notes.
Those notes were dated two weeks before the valet incident.
Lucinda had been preparing the accusation long before the SUV door closed.
She had also asked what would happen to the advisory committee if Silvio temporarily lost decision-making authority.
That question exposed her financial motive.
But there was another detail.
She repeatedly asked whether a guardian could authorize reimbursement for “emergency housing and protection.”
Investigators examined a property Grant had recently placed under contract.
A twelve-bedroom estate.
The financing had fallen apart.
But Grant and Lucinda had apparently planned to revive the purchase using money they hoped to characterize as necessary housing for Ethan and Mia.
They were preparing to use the children’s own assets to buy themselves a mansion.
Silvio read the report twice.
Then he closed it.
He had spent his life thinking dangerous people looked dangerous.
Grant wore tailored jackets.
Lucinda volunteered at charity events.
They smiled beside children in family photographs.
Nothing about evil required ugly packaging.
Then prosecutors received a call from someone who had worked for Grant.
A former assistant.
