Chapter 8 - The Destroyed File
The former assistant was named Caroline.
Grant fired her six weeks earlier.
Officially, she had mishandled confidential paperwork.
In reality, she had opened the wrong folder.
Inside were notes about Silvio.
His travel schedule.
His children.
The trust.
Potential guardianship arguments.
Caroline immediately understood that something was wrong.
Grant caught her reading.
He demanded the folder.
Then he ordered her to shred every page.
Caroline did.
At least, she shredded what Grant saw.
She had already photographed several pages.
One image mattered more than all the others.
Lucinda’s handwriting covered a yellow legal pad.
The sequence was simple.
Create pattern of Silvio being absent.
Document mistakes.
Remove Lucinda from suspicion.
Create child-related emergency.
Arrive as protector.
Seek temporary court intervention.
Delay trust restructuring.
Negotiate control.
It was not a legal strategy.
It was a roadmap.
Near the bottom, another sentence had been underlined twice.
The children must be frightened, not seriously injured.
That line destroyed Lucinda’s claim that she never intended to put Ethan and Mia at risk.
She understood they would suffer.
She simply believed she could control how much.
That arrogance had nearly killed them.
Caroline also preserved invoices.
Grant purchased the jammer through a shell company.
He paid cash for prepaid phones.
He researched the mansion’s camera network using diagrams obtained during his earlier consulting work for Silvio.
Grant had been invited into the Romano home as a professional adviser.
He turned that trust into a weapon.
The criminal case was now substantial.
But Silvio was still facing another battle.
Lucinda filed an emergency petition claiming she feared Silvio’s violent behavior after he assaulted both her and Grant.
The filing included photographs of the destroyed kiosk and brochure rack.
It omitted almost everything that happened before.
For several terrifying hours, Silvio feared the very conspiracy he had exposed might still create legal trouble around his children.
Then his attorney produced the complete valet-area evidence.
The delivery-van recording.
The recovered jammer.
The doctor’s report.
Lucinda’s twelve-second video.
Caroline’s photographs.
The petition did not survive serious scrutiny.
But Lucinda had made one mistake that created a new problem for herself.
In a sworn statement, she denied knowing anything about the children being placed in the SUV.
