The handwritten timeline began at 1:10 p.m.
Silvio leaves mansion.
1:18 p.m.
Children enter SUV.
1:25 p.m.
Vehicle discovered.
1:28 p.m.
Emergency services contacted.
The sequence was precise.
Too precise.
Except one thing had ruined it.
Silvio had returned early.
He was supposed to be across town for another forty minutes.
Grant and Lucinda had not expected him anywhere near the mansion.
Police examined the papers found beneath the seat.
Several pages appeared to have come from Silvio’s own office.
His travel schedule.
A copy of the SUV registration.
An old medical form containing his signature.
A document showing he was the only registered owner of the vehicle.
Every piece pointed toward one conclusion.
If someone had discovered Ethan and Mia trapped inside that SUV later, the immediate assumption would have been devastating.
Their father had left them there.
Silvio thought back to the last two months.
Lucinda had repeatedly questioned whether he was doing too much.
Whether running several companies while raising two children was wearing him down.
Grant had joked publicly about Silvio forgetting appointments.
At the time, the comments had seemed irritating but harmless.
Now they sounded rehearsed.
Police searched Grant.
In his jacket they found a prepaid phone.
Most of its messages had been deleted.
Several remained.
They mentioned an attorney.
A hearing.
And something called emergency guardianship.
Silvio stared at those two words for a long time.
Mia and Ethan had inherited substantial assets through their late mother.
Silvio managed their affairs as their father and legal guardian.
If he were declared dangerously negligent, someone could petition a court for temporary intervention.
That did not guarantee access to the children’s trust.
But it could create chaos.
And chaos gave people opportunities.
Lucinda had one advantage.
She was the children’s maternal aunt.
Family.
A woman who had spent the last year presenting herself as the loving relative who was always ready to help.
Silvio finally saw the shape of the plan.
Lucinda intended to help create a disaster.
Then she intended to become the person who rescued Ethan and Mia from it.
But there was still one question.
Why now?
Police found the answer in Grant’s phone.
A photograph of a legal letter dated five days earlier.
