Chapter 10 - THE EIGHT HUNDRED THOUSAND

The money moved through four accounts.

Veronica’s personal investment account.

Wynn Investigations.

A Nevada shell company.

Then two property purchases in Rhode Island.

Both properties belonged beneficially to Harold Wynn.

He had kept nearly all of it.

Veronica’s claim that she believed she was funding Amelia’s settlement suddenly became testable.

Daniel found an email from seven years earlier.

Veronica to Wynn:

This ends all contact. She stays away from Robert permanently. No letters, no appearances, no child claims.

Wynn:

Understood. A.R. accepts terms.

Veronica:

I want proof.

Wynn:

You will have it.

I read the exchange twice.

“You paid him to keep her away.”

Veronica sat across from us with her lawyer.

“I believed Amelia agreed.”

“Because Harold told you.”

“Yes.”

“Did you ever speak to Amelia?”

“No.”

“Did you ask for her signature?”

“Harold said direct communication was unsafe.”

“Unsafe for whom?”

Her eyes flashed.

“For Robert.”

I leaned toward her.

“Stop using my name as an excuse.”

She looked away.

That was a relationship shift I needed.

For years Veronica had framed every manipulation as protection.

Protection from scandal.

Protection from grief.

Protection from Amelia.

I had rewarded her for it.

No more.

Then investigators uncovered the promised “proof.”

Wynn had sent Veronica a photograph of Amelia standing beside an ATM.

The image included a printed page in her hand.

He claimed it was the settlement acknowledgment.

Forensic review showed the page was too blurred to read.

No signature visible.

No proof.

Veronica had accepted what she wanted to believe.

That did not make her innocent.

It made her flaw clearer.

She valued control over verification.

She wanted Amelia gone, so she accepted a story that allowed Amelia to disappear without forcing Veronica to call herself cruel.

I recognized the pattern because I had done something similar.

I wanted the financial accusation against Amelia resolved, so I trusted the documents Veronica showed me.

Different scale.

Same cowardice.

Then the current kidnapping investigation moved.

Forensic technicians recovered partial location data from Wynn’s newer phone after obtaining a warrant.

On the night Amelia disappeared from the motel, the phone traveled north.

Forty-three miles.

It stopped for fifty-two minutes at an industrial property outside Lowell.

The property was registered to one of Wynn’s shell companies.

Police searched it.

No Amelia.

But inside a locked office they found the red backpack.

My daughter’s bag.

Inside were clothes.

A charger.

Maisie’s birth certificate.

And a small external drive.

The drive was encrypted.

Daniel looked at me.

“Amelia told me she had the original transfer trail.”

“This is it?”

“Maybe.”

Then a detective entered holding an evidence photograph.

Inside the same office, they had found a woman’s coat.

Dark gray.

Maisie identified it immediately.

“Mom’s.”

The reward became consequence instantly.

Amelia had been at that property after the motel.

The question was no longer whether Wynn took her.

May you like

It was where he moved her next.

📖 The recovered backpack proved Amelia reached Wynn’s property alive, but the encrypted drive forced us to find the one clue she had deliberately left for me. 👇
