Chapter 18 - CATHERINE REED

The storage facility sat outside Providence.
Account holder:
Catherine Reed.
Fake identification.
Cash payments.
Harold had chosen my late wife’s name because anyone searching Wynn assets would not naturally connect it.
Amelia had discovered the alias in an old metadata trail.
Investigators obtained the warrant.
Inside the unit were twelve filing boxes, three computers, and a safe.
Harold kept everything.
That became his downfall.
People who live through leverage rarely destroy leverage.
They hoard it.
The files contained surveillance assignments for corporate clients, spouses, attorneys, and wealthy families.
Some appeared legitimate.
Others crossed lines.
Blackmail photographs.
Private medical information.
Unreported cash payments.
Then came the Reed boxes.
Veronica payments.
Amelia surveillance.
Vincent Cole instructions.
Copies of the forged foundation records.
The original Meridian corporate formation file.
And a recorder from a meeting between Harold and Veronica one week before Amelia’s crash.
Veronica’s voice:
“I want her frightened enough to stop.”
Harold:
“And if she runs?”
“Let her. Just keep her away from Robert until she understands what she’s risking.”
“Her job?”
“Her future.”
No order to kill.
No road instructions.
But unmistakable intent to intimidate my daughter into silence.
Then another recording from seven years earlier.
Harold:
“She survived.”
Long silence.
Veronica:
“Does Robert know?”
“No.”
“Keep it that way.”
Those four words ended any remaining ambiguity about Veronica’s seven-year silence.
Keep it that way.
She knowingly concealed Amelia’s survival from me.
Not because Amelia demanded privacy.
Because Veronica wanted her gone.
I had to leave the evidence room.
I stood outside with my hands against the wall.
Daniel joined me.
“You all right?”
“No.”
The answer was becoming useful.
He waited.
“I was going to marry her.”
“I know.”
“I proposed in the same ballroom where Maisie walked in.”
“I know.”
“I spent years thanking Veronica for helping me survive Amelia’s death.”
Daniel said nothing.
There was nothing kind enough to fix that.
The vault also gave investigators leverage on Wynn.
His current accounts were frozen.
Properties flagged.
Associates questioned.
His professional network collapsed rapidly once warrants became public.
But Harold himself remained missing.
Then one laptop revealed a draft email scheduled but never sent.
To Veronica.
Subject: If I go down.
Veronica,
Robert will learn what you did, but he should also learn what you were protecting him from. Ask Amelia who signed the original Meridian authorization.
I stared at the sentence.
Amelia had been framed with an authorization carrying her credentials.
Harold was implying someone else inside the family helped.
The mystery was smaller now.

But one old signature could still damage everything Amelia and I believed about the beginning.
📖 Harold’s vault proved Veronica knowingly kept Amelia alive and hidden, yet his final unsent message raised one last question about who helped manufacture the original financial frame. 👇
