Chapter 9 - DANIEL’S SECRET

I put the photograph in front of Daniel.
He did not pretend surprise.
That made me angrier.
“You met her.”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Three months ago.”
My fist hit the table before I could stop it.
Maisie was not in the room.
Thank God.
“You knew she was alive.”
“Yes.”
“And you stood beside me while I opened that note?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Amelia made me promise.”
I stood.
“You had no right.”
“I know.”
“Then why?”
He looked exhausted.
Not guilty exactly.
But burdened.
“Because she was building a case.”
“Against Veronica?”
“And Wynn.”
“Why didn’t she come to me?”
Daniel met my eyes.
“Because she didn’t trust you.”
That silenced me.
Not because I liked it.
Because I deserved the possibility.
He continued.
“Amelia contacted me anonymously five months ago. She sent copies of records showing the old embezzlement accusation against her was fabricated. I asked to meet.”
“You recognized her.”
“Eventually.”
“What did she want?”
“To establish proof before approaching you.”
“What proof?”
“That Veronica financed the original surveillance and that Wynn had turned it into something more.”
Daniel opened his secured files.
He had been waiting for investigator authorization before disclosing privileged material because Amelia initially approached him as counsel seeking advice.
Now, with her missing and Maisie involved, legal boundaries had shifted.
He showed me a memo Amelia prepared.
According to her, she survived the crash because she jumped from the car before it went through the guardrail.
The crash was not staged by her.
Someone forced her off the road.
She could not identify the second vehicle’s driver.
But Harold Wynn approached her two days later at a clinic.
He told her Robert believed she was guilty.
He showed her copies of the forged financial documents.
Then he offered a choice.
Disappear permanently.
Or face prosecution for theft and “other consequences” for her unborn child.
“Why not call police?” I asked.
“She believed Wynn had access inside your organization and possibly law enforcement contacts. She was pregnant, injured, terrified, and you had just suspended her from the company.”
Every sentence cut.
“She changed her name,” Daniel continued. “Moved repeatedly. Veronica later learned she survived through Wynn.”
“And the eight hundred thousand?”
“Amelia said she never received it.”
I stared at him.
“Then where did it go?”
“That’s what she came back to prove.”
The payment records Veronica promised became urgent.
Daniel had already requested them.
The transfer did exist.
$800,000.
Veronica to a trust account controlled by Harold Wynn’s investigation firm.
Description:
A.R. resolution.
Not Amelia.
Wynn.
Veronica had paid him eight hundred thousand to “resolve” the Amelia problem.
Whether she believed that meant pay Amelia or silence Amelia still mattered.
But the money never reached my daughter.
Then Daniel showed me the last email Amelia sent him.
Three days before the gala.
I found the original transfer trail. Harold kept everything. If I can get the red backpack to Dad, he’ll finally see what I couldn’t prove eight years ago.
Below it:
If I disappear, protect Maisie first.
My anger at Daniel did not vanish.
But the shape changed.
He had kept Amelia’s confidence.
Just as she asked.
And she still had not trusted me enough to come through my front door.
That was not Veronica’s betrayal alone.

Part of it belonged to me.
