Chapter 13 - THE BLACKMAIL

Veronica’s second recorded interview changed everything I thought I understood.
“I went to the cabin because Harold called me.”
“Why?” the detective asked.
“He said Amelia was back.”
“You already knew that?”
“Not recently.”
“He told you he had her?”
Veronica stared at her hands.
“Yes.”
My throat tightened.
“What did you do?”
“I told him to let her go.”
I nearly stood.
Daniel touched my forearm—not restraining, only reminding.
Listen.
Veronica continued.
“Harold said she had records connecting me to the old payments.”
“She did.”
“I know that now.”
“What did he want?”
“Two million dollars.”
There it was.
Wynn’s final leverage.
Not loyalty.
Money.
“What happened when you reached the cabin?”
“Amelia was there.”
Alive.
My daughter had been alive in the same room as the woman who kept her from me.
“Was she conscious?”
“Yes.”
“Injured?”
“She had a cut near her hairline. Her wrist was bruised.”
“Did you help her?”
Veronica’s eyes filled.
Not enough to make me forgive her.
Enough to make her look human.
“I gave her water and pain medicine.”
“Why didn’t you call police?”
“Harold had copies of everything.”
“What everything?”
“My payments. My emails. The old surveillance. He said he would make it look like I ordered Amelia killed eight years ago.”
“Did you?”
“No.”
The answer came hard.
Immediate.
“I wanted her gone from Robert’s life. I wanted her discredited. I paid Harold to frighten her and later to keep her away. I did not tell him to run her car off the road.”
I watched her face.
That was a substantial admission.
A terrible one.
But it drew a line.
“Why leave Amelia there?” I asked.
Veronica finally looked at me.
“Because I was a coward.”
The room went silent.
Not stability.
Not protection.
Not complexity.
Coward.
It was the first honest word I had heard from her.
She said Harold promised to release Amelia after payment.
Veronica transferred $500,000 as a first installment.
Then he disappeared from the cabin with Amelia before she could return.
Bank records confirmed the payment.
Wynn’s blackmail trail was now documented.
Then came the midpoint explosion.
Veronica revealed Harold was not the driver who struck Amelia’s car eight years earlier.
He had hired someone.
“Who?”
“A man named Vincent Cole.”
The witness.
The contractor.
The recipient of $75,000.
The man whose statement declared Amelia had been driving erratically.
According to Veronica, Harold later admitted that Vincent sideswiped Amelia’s car to frighten her into stopping.
The impact sent her through the guardrail.
They believed she died.
When Harold found her alive two days later, he created a new plan.
Fear her into disappearing.
Then charge Veronica forever for maintaining the lie.
Suddenly CHAPTERS 1 through 12 looked different.
Veronica had not controlled Harold for eight years.
She had created him.
Then become trapped by what she created.
Her guilt remained enormous.
But the true architect of Amelia’s continued disappearance was Harold Wynn.
