Chapter 4 - The Weakness Hidden Behind The Uniform

Reed had spent years studying people.
Their fears.
Their reactions.
Their limits.
The problem was…
He never expected someone to study him back.
The senior officer opened nothing.
The folder remained sealed.
That bothered Reed more than anything.
Because mystery created uncertainty.
And uncertainty was something he couldn’t control.
“You’re not supposed to be here.”
The words came from Reed.
Not a question.
A belief.
I looked at him.
“Neither are you.”
The recruits went completely still.
Nobody spoke to Reed like that.
Not publicly.
Not calmly.
His face hardened.
Then softened.
A dangerous combination.
People like Reed became unpredictable when they lost control.
The officer noticed too.
“Chief.”
A warning.
Reed looked away.
But his hands tightened.
He wanted to know.
Who I was.
Why the folder existed.
Why someone senior enough to command silence had walked into the mess hall for me.
Then one recruit quietly asked:
“Ma’am…”
Everyone looked.
He swallowed.
“Were you always like this?”
I almost smiled.
“No.”
The answer surprised them.
Because they expected confidence.
They didn’t expect honesty.
“I learned.”
The room became quiet again.
Because everyone understood something.
People weren’t born disciplined.
They became disciplined.
Usually because something forced them to.
The officer looked at the folder.
Then at me.
“We need to discuss the contents.”
I shook my head.
“Not here.”
The officer nodded.
Then Reed interrupted.
“Why?”
Everyone looked at him.
He stared at me.
“Why does she get special treatment?”
The officer finally turned fully toward him.
And Reed realized too late…
May you like
That was the wrong question.
