Chapter 7 - The Secret Reed Was Carrying

Reed denied it immediately.

“Me?”

Too fast.

Too defensive.

The officer noticed.

So did I.

People reveal themselves through timing.

Not just words.

“I don’t know anything.”

I looked at him.

“Then why were you afraid when you saw my name?”

Silence.

That was the answer.

The officer stepped closer.

“Chief Reed.”

Reed straightened.

“Yes, sir.”

“Tell the truth.”

For the first time, Reed looked uncomfortable.

Not angry.

Uncomfortable.

He glanced at the sealed folder.

“I heard rumors.”

“What rumors?”

He didn’t answer.

Because saying them would make them real.

I picked up my tray.

My ribs hurt.

But I stayed standing.

Reed watched.

Maybe for the first time…

He saw me.

Not the quiet woman.

Not the easy target.

Me.

The officer looked at me.

“We need to leave.”

I nodded.

Then Reed spoke.

“Wait.”

Everyone stopped.

He looked at me.

“What are you?”

I stared at him.

A strange question.

Because I was still just Elena.

But he wasn’t asking that.

He was asking why he was wrong.
