Chapter 6 - The Second Seal

The officer read the outside.

Nothing else.

No opening.

No explanation.

But his reaction changed.

That was enough.

Reed noticed.

“What is it?”

The officer ignored him.

That made Reed angry.

But anger was no longer useful.

The room had shifted.

Everyone felt it.

I watched the second envelope.

Different seal.

Different purpose.

The officer looked at me.

“Did you expect this?”

“No.”

“Good.”

I frowned.

“Good?”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“Because if you expected it, someone already warned you.”

That was the problem.

Someone had.

Just not directly.

The world I left behind had a way of finding me.

Reed stepped closer.

“You’re hiding something.”

I looked at him.

“So are you.”

His expression froze.

Because he knew.

I had noticed.

The officer looked between us.

“Interesting.”

A single word.

But it carried weight.

Then the recruits were dismissed.

Slowly.

Quietly.

Nobody wanted to leave.

They wanted answers.

But some answers were dangerous.

After everyone moved away, the officer lowered his voice.

“Your name is appearing in places it should not.”

I looked at the sealed folder.

“Who knows?”

The officer looked at Reed.

And that answer terrified me.
