The officer looked directly at Reed.
“Because you have mistaken silence for weakness.”
Nobody moved.
Reed’s face changed.
The sentence hit harder than an accusation.

He had seen me quiet.
And assumed I was powerless.

The officer picked up the folder.
“Your actions today were observed.”
Reed looked around.
“The cameras?”
The officer glanced toward the corner.
Security cameras.
The same cameras Reed forgot existed.
His expression changed.
Not fear.
Calculation.
He was thinking.

I watched him.

Reed wasn’t worried about punishment.
He was worried about exposure.
The officer turned to me.
“Are you injured?”
I hesitated.
Then answered honestly.
“Yes.”
The recruits looked down.
Because everyone heard.

Then the mess hall doors opened again.
A second person entered.
Carrying another envelope.
The officer took it.
