Chapter 20 - The Liver Decision

Toby’s liver function worsened unexpectedly.
Naomi called Elijah into a private room.
“The toxic injury is progressing.”
“What does that mean?”
“He may need a transplant.”
Elijah’s blood type matched.
Further testing showed he could be a partial-liver donor.
The procedure carried real risks.
He agreed before Naomi finished explaining.
“I’ll do it.”
“You need to understand—”
“I understand enough.”
Naomi’s voice sharpened.
“This is not punishment. Do not agree because you think suffering proves love.”
Elijah looked at her.
“I’m agreeing because he needs me.”
The transplant team evaluated him.
Surgery was scheduled when Toby’s condition crossed the threshold.
Elijah wrote letters in case he did not survive.
One for Toby.
One for Naomi.
He gave Naomi hers sealed.
She refused it.
“You can give it to me after surgery.”
“What if—”
“After.”
The operation lasted nine hours.
Naomi was not part of the surgical team, but she remained nearby.
Toby received part of Elijah’s liver.
Both survived.
Days later, Toby opened his eyes and saw Elijah in the bed beside him.
“Dad?”
Elijah smiled weakly.
“I’m here.”
Toby touched the bandage on his own stomach.
“Did you give me something?”
“A small piece.”
“Will it grow back?”
“Yes.”
Toby thought carefully.
“Then we both grow.”
Naomi turned away so they would not see her cry.

The transplant saved Toby.
But the criminal trial would determine whether anyone else’s child would ever face the same danger.
