Chapter 4 - The Woman Elijah Chose
Cassandra asked for an attorney.
Detective Price placed her in a separate consultation room.
Elijah remained outside Toby’s room.
Naomi reviewed the treatment chart.
“You need to tell me everything he may have taken.”
“I don’t know.”
“You own the company that made the drug.”
“I didn’t bring it home.”
“But Cassandra did.”
Elijah lowered his head.
Naomi’s voice sharpened.
“Your shame does not help your son.”
He looked at her.
The last time they had stood this close, he told her he needed “space.”
Three days later, Naomi learned through a newspaper photograph that he was engaged to Cassandra.
She had never received a real explanation.
Now he spoke quietly.
“Cassandra came into the company during the investor crisis.”
Naomi said nothing.
“She brought funding connections. She made the board believe I could save the business.”
“And you married her.”
“Yes.”
“Three weeks before our wedding.”
His eyes closed.
“I was a coward.”
“That is not a medical fact I need tonight.”
The words struck him.
Naomi returned to Toby.
Elijah remained outside, staring through the glass.
Cassandra’s attorney arrived at 1:15 a.m.
Within minutes, Cassandra changed her story.
She claimed Elijah personally supplied the bottle.
She said he instructed her to give Toby the medicine if the child experienced an allergic reaction.
Elijah reacted with disbelief.
“She’s lying.”
Detective Price asked, “Can you prove that?”
Elijah opened his mouth.
Then stopped.
The company’s internal inventory system showed that SN-14 had been checked out using Elijah’s executive credentials.
Two weeks earlier.
The digital signature was his.
Cassandra had a motive to lie.
But the records made Elijah look guilty.
