Chapter 10 - Rebecca’s Real Motive
Rebecca’s attorneys portrayed her as a frightened young mother abandoned by a soldier.
The story sounded convincing.
Until prosecutors introduced her financial records.
Rebecca had not hidden Caleb only because she feared losing custody.
She had used his existence as leverage for years.
She blackmailed Claire.
Threatened Dana.
Collected payments from Caleb’s biological grandfather.
She told different people different versions of the truth.
To Claire, Mason was dangerous.
To Dana, he would abandon Violet.
To Caleb, Mason knew he was alive and rejected him.
Every lie isolated Caleb further.
But there was another motive.
Mason’s grandfather had created an educational trust for any biological descendants.
Rebecca learned about it during her pregnancy.
If Mason acknowledged Caleb, the trust would be jointly controlled until Caleb became an adult.
If Mason remained unaware, Rebecca believed she could claim control herself.
She spent years trying to access the funds.
The hospital bracelet and birth records were necessary proof.
That was why she became desperate when Caleb obtained them.
Caleb sat in court beside the Prices.
Mason sat several rows away, allowing him space.
Rebecca looked at her son repeatedly.
Caleb never looked back.
Claire testified.
She admitted accepting money and falsifying the discharge.
Dana testified about the threats.
Violet described Rebecca grabbing the backpack and causing her fall.
Then Caleb took the stand.
Rebecca began crying.
“Baby, you don’t have to do this.”
The judge ordered her silent.
Caleb’s hands shook.
The prosecutor asked what Rebecca told him about Mason.
“She said he knew about me.”
“Did he?”
“No.”
“How do you know?”
“Because I saw his face when he learned.”
The courtroom became silent.
Caleb continued.
“She told me everyone leaves. But she was the one who kept running.”
Rebecca covered her face.
The jury convicted her of kidnapping-related custodial interference, fraud, blackmail, assault, evidence tampering, and multiple identity offenses.
Claire pleaded guilty to fraud, falsification of medical records, and conspiracy.
Dana was not criminally charged, but her relationship with Violet changed permanently.
The court did not create instant justice.
It created consequences.
Rebecca received sixteen years.
Claire received three years, followed by supervised release.
Caleb’s legal identity was restored.
His birth certificate now listed Mason as his father.
But when a clerk asked whether Caleb wanted to change his surname, he answered:
“No. Not yet.”
