Chapter 6 - The Bracelet From Room 214

Caleb had found the bracelet inside Rebecca’s locked desk.

It contained his birth name.

Caleb Mason Hale.

Not Caleb Lane.

The bracelet listed Mason as his father.

It also contained a hospital record number.

Caleb used the number to request archived documents.

The records showed he was born healthy.

No emergency.

No death certificate.

No transfer to another hospital.

But there was a discharge form signed two days later.

The signature belonged to Claire Hale.

Mason’s sister had falsely identified herself as Rebecca’s authorized family representative.

She helped remove Caleb from the hospital before Mason returned from deployment processing.

“Why?” Mason asked.

Caleb answered quietly.

“I think Rebecca paid her.”

Detective Brooks investigated the old bank records.

A deposit had entered Claire’s account three days after Caleb’s birth.

Twenty-five thousand dollars.

At the time, Claire was buried in nursing-school debt.

Rebecca’s family had money.

Claire accepted payment to help hide the baby.

But years later, regret turned into fear.

Rebecca demanded continuing payments.

Claire obeyed because exposure would destroy her career and family.

“Where is the bracelet now?” Elena asked.

“I gave it to Violet.”

Mason looked toward the hospital room.

The crushed birthday envelope had held only the photograph.

The bracelet was missing.

Rebecca believed Violet still had it.

That explained why she entered the house.

But Violet had hidden it somewhere else.

Mason returned to her bedside.

“Where did you put Caleb’s bracelet?”

Violet closed her eyes.

“In the family photo.”

“Which one?”

“The picture from my seventh birthday.”

Mason remembered the frame.

It hung beside the alarm keypad.

Police retrieved it.

Behind the photograph, taped beneath the cardboard backing, was a tiny hospital bracelet.

Caleb Mason Hale.

Mason held it carefully.

For sixteen years, he had believed his son died without ever knowing him.

Now the proof fit inside his palm.

Detective Brooks sealed it into evidence.

Rebecca called Mason again.

This time, she did not pretend.

“Give me the bracelet.”

“Where is Caleb?”

“He ran away from me.”

“You lied about his death.”

“You were leaving.”

“I was serving overseas.”

“You chose the Army.”

“You took my child.”

Rebecca’s voice cracked.

“You would have taken him from me.”

“No. I would have raised him.”

Rebecca became silent.

Then she whispered:

“Claire made the choice too.”

Mason looked toward the empty hallway.

“What happened to her?”

Rebecca laughed softly.

“Ask Caleb.”

The call ended.

👉 Caleb knew where Claire had gone, and the truth threatened to turn him against the father he had only just found.
