Chapter 13 - The Years That Couldn’t Return

Mason wanted to compensate for every missing year.
He bought Caleb gifts.
Offered trips.
Suggested college plans.
Caleb began pulling away.
Mark Price finally spoke to him privately.
“You’re trying to father all sixteen years at once.”
Mason looked down.
“I missed everything.”
“That wasn’t your choice.”
“It still happened.”
Mark nodded.
“But Caleb doesn’t need you to repair his childhood. He needs you to be reliable now.”
Mason stopped trying to create dramatic memories.
He started showing up.
Every Saturday game.
Every parent meeting Caleb invited him to.
Every quiet dinner.
He learned that Caleb hated onions, loved old Western movies, and became nervous before exams.
Small knowledge built real intimacy.
Violet noticed the change too.
“You’re less intense,” she told him.
“That’s good?”
“Very.”
Dana worked to rebuild her relationship with Violet.
She attended counseling and stopped defending her silence.
“I was afraid of losing our family,” she told Violet.
“You lost my trust instead.”
“I know.”
Dana accepted that trust would return only if Violet chose to give it.
There were no forced hugs.
No instant reconciliation.
One afternoon, Caleb asked Mason to drive him to Claire’s prison.
He did not want a visit.
He only wanted to see the building.
They sat in the parking lot.
“She was there when I was born,” Caleb said.
“Yes.”
“She helped take me.”
“Yes.”
“She also tried to stop my mother from hurting Violet.”
“Yes.”
Caleb looked at Mason.
“How do I know what kind of person she is?”
Mason answered honestly.
“You may never reduce someone to one thing. People can regret terrible choices and still be responsible for them.”
Caleb stared at the prison walls.
“I don’t want to see her.”
“You don’t have to.”
They drove away.
Two years after the attack, Caleb graduated high school.
When his name was announced, he crossed the stage as Caleb Lane.
Mason stood beside the Prices.
Violet shouted louder than everyone.
Afterward, Caleb handed Mason an envelope.
Inside was a petition to add Hale as a second surname.
Caleb Lane-Hale.
“I’m not replacing them,” Caleb said, nodding toward the Prices.
“I know.”
“I’m adding you.”
Mason’s voice broke.
May you like
“Thank you.”
👉 Caleb had chosen to carry Mason’s name, but Violet’s final discovery would reveal one last secret hidden inside the family photographs.
