Chapter 9 - Dana’s Silence
Dana told Mason she learned about Caleb fourteen years earlier.
That was true.
But it was not the entire truth.
She had not discovered him accidentally.
Rebecca contacted her.
At the time, Mason and Dana’s marriage was struggling.
Rebecca warned that if Mason learned Caleb was alive, he would leave Dana and fight for custody of both children.
Dana believed her.
Rebecca demanded money in exchange for silence.
Dana refused to pay.
Instead, she confronted Claire.
Claire begged her not to tell Mason.
She claimed Caleb was safe and Rebecca would disappear if threatened.
Dana agreed to remain silent.
Not because she believed it was right.
Because she feared losing her family.
When Mason learned this, he felt the same betrayal all over again.
“You watched me grieve a child who was alive.”
Dana lowered her eyes.
“I thought telling you would destroy us.”
“Silence destroyed us.”
“I know.”
Violet listened from the doorway.
“You knew I had a brother?”
Dana turned toward her.
“I wanted to protect you.”
“From what?”
“From confusion.”
Violet’s face hardened.
“You protected yourself.”
Dana began crying.
Violet did not comfort her.
Mason recognized the lesson repeating through generations.
Adults made selfish choices.
Then called them protection.
Dana agreed to provide every message Rebecca had sent.
Those messages proved Rebecca repeatedly manipulated family members using fear of separation.
One contained a threat directed at Violet.
**If Mason starts looking for Caleb, his daughter will learn what happens when families refuse to stay buried.**
Dana had saved it but never reported it.
Detective Brooks looked at her.
“You received a threat against your child and stayed silent?”
Dana whispered, “I thought Rebecca was bluffing.”
Violet walked away.
The truth did not make her feel safer.
It showed how many adults had known danger existed and decided not to act.
Mason found her on the porch.
“I don’t know who to trust,” she said.
“You don’t have to trust everyone today.”
“Did you hide Caleb from me too?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I wanted proof first.”
“That sounds like what they all say.”
Mason accepted the criticism.
“You’re right.”
He sat beside her.
“I should have told you I was searching.”
Violet looked at him.
“Will you stop deciding what truth I can handle?”
“Yes.”
