Chapter 5 - The Missing Second Glass
Violet remembered only fragments.
Claire had called that afternoon and said she was dropping off a late birthday gift.
Violet let her in.
Claire brought lemonade.
They sat beside the glass coffee table.
At first, Claire acted nervous but affectionate.
Then Violet showed her the photograph of Caleb.
Claire’s hands began shaking.
“Where did you get this?”
“Caleb gave it to me.”
“You met him?”
“Yes.”
Claire demanded the envelope.
Violet refused.
Then the front door opened again.
A woman entered without knocking.
Violet recognized her from the photographs Caleb had shown her.
Rebecca Lane.
Caleb’s mother.
The second lemonade glass belonged to Rebecca.
“She said Dad ruined her life,” Violet whispered.
“What happened next?” Detective Brooks asked.
“They argued.”
“Who?”
“Rebecca and Aunt Claire.”
Violet remembered Claire saying:
“You promised never to involve the children.”
Rebecca replied:
“You stopped paying.”
Then Rebecca turned toward Violet.
She wanted to know where Caleb was.
Violet refused.
Rebecca grabbed the backpack.
Violet pulled it back.
She lost her balance, struck the hallway wall, and fell.
The last thing she remembered was Claire shouting Rebecca’s name.
That meant Claire had not intentionally attacked Violet.
But she had brought danger into the house.
Rebecca had taken the missing lemonade glass.
She also took something else.
Violet’s phone history showed repeated calls to a number registered under a fake name.
Detectives traced it to Caleb.
He had disappeared from school that afternoon.
His foster family believed he was staying with a friend.
He was not.
Mason’s phone rang.
The caller ID was blocked.
A teenage boy spoke.
“Are you Mason Hale?”
Mason stopped breathing.
“Yes.”
“This is Caleb.”
Mason gripped the phone.
“Where are you?”
“I’m safe.”
“Your sister was hurt.”
“I know.”
“How?”
A pause.
“My mother found out Violet met me.”
“Did she take you?”
“No.”
“Then where is she?”
Caleb’s voice hardened.
“She’s looking for the hospital bracelet.”
Mason stared at Detective Brooks.
“What bracelet?”

“The one from when I was born.”
👉 Caleb had preserved evidence from the night Claire helped convince Mason his newborn son had died.
