Chapter 3 - The Son He Never Met

Caleb was born seven months before Violet.
Mason had been twenty-four and serving overseas.
Caleb’s mother, Rebecca Lane, ended their relationship shortly before deployment.
She told Mason the baby had died during delivery.
Mason believed her.
He mourned a son he never held.
Months later, Mason met Dana.
Their relationship moved quickly.
Violet was born the following year.
For sixteen years, Mason never questioned the story Rebecca told him.
Then three months before the attack, he received an anonymous email.
**Your son is alive.**
He deleted it, assuming it was a scam.
A second email included a photograph of a teenage boy with Mason’s eyes.
The message said:
**His name is Caleb Lane. Rebecca lied.**
Mason hired a private investigator.
The results were incomplete, but one fact was clear.
Caleb existed.
He lived thirty miles outside Dallas.
Mason had not told Violet.
He wanted proof before turning her life upside down.
Now a photograph of Violet and Caleb had been found beneath her backpack.
“You think she found him?” Detective Brooks asked.
“She must have.”
“Why wouldn’t she tell you?”
Mason looked down.
“Maybe she knew I was hiding it.”
Dana arrived at the hospital.
She rushed toward Violet’s room, then froze when she saw the photograph.
Mason watched her face.
“You know him.”
Dana shook her head too quickly.
“No.”
“His name is Caleb.”
Her expression collapsed.
Mason stepped closer.
“You knew.”
Dana lowered her voice.
“Not here.”
“You knew my son was alive?”
“I found out years ago.”
The hallway seemed to disappear around him.
“How many years?”
Dana’s eyes filled.
“Fourteen.”
Mason stared at her.
Violet was two when Dana learned the truth.
Fourteen years of silence.
Fourteen birthdays.
Fourteen chances to tell him.
Detective Brooks moved between them.
“Why did you keep it hidden?”
Dana looked toward Violet’s hospital room.
“Because Rebecca threatened to take Violet too.”
Mason’s voice became cold.
“Rebecca had no claim to Violet.”
“No. But someone in your family helped her.”
“Who?”
Dana swallowed.
May you like
“Your sister.”
👉 Claire, the trusted aunt with an alarm code, had been connected to Caleb’s disappearance from the beginning.
