Chapter 11 - The Ballroom Turns

The wedding guests expected music.
Instead, the ballroom screens flickered to life.
At first there was confusion—heads turning, champagne glasses pausing in midair, whispers rising beneath the chandeliers. Then the video began.
Preston with the belt.
Giulietta removing the ring.
The slap.
Warren shouting.
By the time Giulietta walked into the ballroom flanked by Enzo, Sofia, and Margaret, every wealthy donor, distant cousin, columnist, and business rival in the room had gone silent.
Warren arrived seconds later under escort, furious and humiliated. Preston followed, face red, hair disordered, tuxedo dignity in ruins.
Giulietta did not rush. She walked to the front of the room like a woman stepping onto a stage she had built herself.
“I’m sorry to interrupt lunch,” she said evenly. “But I thought our guests deserved honesty.”
No one laughed.
Sofia addressed the room next. She summarized the attempted coercive rider, the trust protections around Luca, and the recorded threats made in the bridal suite. The deputy district attorney then confirmed that, based on the footage and prior evidence submitted that morning, investigators were opening immediate review into assault, coercion, and financial misconduct linked to the Hale family businesses.
That was when the first banker in the front row stood up and quietly walked away from Warren’s table.
Then another.
Then a woman from a philanthropic board removed her place card and set it down like something contaminated.
Warren shouted that it was all a setup. Preston accused Giulietta of seducing him into a legal trap. But every word made them look smaller. Meaner. More desperate.
Margaret stepped forward last.
She did not scream. She did not cry.
She simply described what Warren had done to her, how people with money and status had helped him rename abuse as instability, and how she had watched her son grow into the same posture, the same tone, the same cruelty.
When she finished, the silence in the room felt holy.
Then the district attorney’s investigator approached Warren and asked him to come along.

He refused.
So they called for uniformed officers.
