Chapter 12 - The Paper Trail

The Hales could argue about feelings.
They couldn’t argue with paper.
By late afternoon, Warren’s lawyer was demanding access to the bridal suite, the ballroom feed, and the licensing documents. Sofia was ready for all of it.
At Marconi headquarters, three floors of conference rooms turned into a war room.
Every document Warren had rushed. Every account Preston had hidden. Every shell transfer the Hale companies made in the months before the engagement. Giulietta sat at the center of it in her wedding dress with the veil gone, reading line by line while coffee grew cold beside her.
The biggest break came from the rider Preston had tried to force her to sign.
What he didn’t know was that the metadata trail on the digital draft linked edits to a Hale executive’s private server—one already flagged in a banking inquiry. The language targeting Giulietta’s “emotional instability” had been inserted by counsel working for Warren’s holding company.
That meant premeditation.
Not a spontaneous bad act. A plan.
Then came an even uglier piece: internal emails discussing how quickly control over Luca’s trust-linked image rights, family foundation votes, and certain maritime shares might be leveraged “once the bride is contained.”
Contained.
Giulietta stared at that word for a long time.
Contained like a problem.
Contained like a widow.
Contained like a mother standing in the way of men who mistook inheritance for entitlement.
When Preston was questioned that evening, he tried blaming Warren for everything. Said the rider was his father’s idea. Said the belt was “symbolic.” Said he had been under pressure.
Giulietta didn’t bother answering him directly.
Instead, she gave investigators Margaret’s evidence, the hospital records, and the old settlement agreement. The pattern wasn’t just visible anymore. It was undeniable.
By dusk, emergency court motions were filed to freeze Hale-linked attempts to challenge Luca’s trust or contact him through intermediaries. The civil marriage registration Preston had signed became grounds not for his victory, but for immediate legal quarantine from the very assets he wanted.

He had walked into the Marconi structure believing he was taking possession.
In reality, he had signed a document proving motive.
