Chapter 14 - Under Oath

The emergency hearing packed out fast.

Reporters lined the back wall. Socialites who once begged for Warren’s attention now studied their phones to avoid his eye. Preston sat beside his attorney looking less like a groom and more like a defendant waiting to learn the weather of his future.

Giulietta wore a simple black dress. No veil. No ring.

The judge was a woman in her sixties with a voice so calm it made liars sound louder.

Sofia presented the trust structure first. Clear. Measured. Brutal in its clarity. Luca Marconi was the protected beneficiary. Giulietta was his guardian. Preston had signed entry into that structure. The coercive rider had targeted Giulietta’s role and therefore endangered a minor heir.

Then came the video.

No dramatic soundtrack. No edits. Just truth.

The judge watched Preston lift the belt.

She watched Warren rush in and shout.

She watched Giulietta stand her ground.

When the clip ended, the room remained silent until the judge turned to Preston. “Did you or did you not say those words?”

His lawyer started to object. The judge shut him down with a glance.

Preston tried the weak version of accountability. “I was upset.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

“Yes,” he muttered.

Warren did worse. He called Margaret unstable. He claimed Giulietta manipulated everyone. He said families handled things privately.

The judge leaned forward. “Abuse does not become private just because rich men prefer closed doors.”

That line was all over the news within an hour.

By the end of the hearing, the court granted emergency protective orders for Giulietta and Luca, froze any Hale attempt to approach trust-linked assets, and referred financial materials for broader criminal review. The district attorney’s office announced formal next steps before lunchtime.

When Warren stood to leave, one of his longtime investors was waiting outside—not with support, but with a lawsuit notice.

Preston called after Giulietta in the hallway. “You ruined my life.”

She turned, eyes steady. “No, Preston. I recorded you while you described it.”

He had no answer.
