Chapter 2 - The Woman Who Vanished
Three weeks earlier, the wedding had looked like the society event of the year in Manhattan.
Giulietta Marconi, daughter of late shipping magnate Antonio Marconi, was marrying Preston Hale, the polished son of real estate titan Warren Hale. Newspapers called it old-money elegance meeting political power. Every guest list in New York wanted in.
But behind the headlines, Warren’s empire was bleeding.
And behind Giulietta’s smile, she already knew it.
She had learned to read men early. Her father taught her that charm was often just well-dressed hunger. Since her husband Marco died four years earlier, she’d raised their nine-year-old son, Luca, while taking a growing role in Marconi Holdings. By the time the engagement was announced, people whispered that Giulietta was too graceful to be dangerous.
That had been useful.
The first crack appeared during a lunch at the Hale townhouse. Warren dismissed a waitress so harshly the girl nearly dropped a tray. Preston laughed. Giulietta didn’t.
The second crack came when Preston gripped her elbow in the car afterward—hard enough to leave a faint bruise—because she had embarrassed his father by correcting a number in front of investors.
“You don’t do that again,” he’d said with a smile still on his face.
Then came the strangest clue of all.
An older woman named Margaret Doyle requested a private meeting with Giulietta through the Marconi family attorney. No explanation. No photograph. Just a message: Ask Warren Hale where Eleanor went.
Giulietta met her in a quiet Italian restaurant in Tribeca.
Margaret was Preston’s mother.
Or at least, she had been before Warren buried her name, bought her silence, and told the world she had suffered a breakdown and disappeared by choice.
