Chapter 4 - What the Hales Were Hiding

By the end of the week, Giulietta had her answer.
Warren Hale’s public image was immaculate. His private numbers were not.
Three major construction loans were in default. A luxury condo project in Miami was under quiet investigation. Two shell companies tied to a Hale cousin had moved money offshore. Preston’s own accounts showed reckless spending, private gambling debts, and a series of transfers made just days before the engagement announcement.
The wedding wasn’t romance.
It was a rescue mission.
At the Marconi offices overlooking the East River, family attorney Sofia Bellucci spread documents across the conference table. “There’s more,” she said. “Someone tried to slip an amended marital property rider into your signing packet.”
Giulietta scanned the page.
The language was dense. Deliberately so. But its purpose was simple. If signed, it would give Preston temporary emergency authority over certain trust-linked decisions in the event Giulietta became medically or emotionally compromised.
“Emotionally compromised?” Giulietta repeated.
Sofia gave her a look. “A generous phrase for ‘declared unstable.’”
Giulietta thought about Margaret. About the settlement. About a rich husband who could hurt his wife, call her hysterical, and make her disappear.
Then she saw the last line.
If Giulietta were deemed unable to serve as guardian, review of Luca’s protective trust authority could be triggered.
Now it wasn’t just about her.
It was about her son.
That evening, at a family dinner, Preston acted like nothing was wrong. He kissed her cheek. Asked whether she preferred white roses or peonies. Smiled across the candlelight like a man auditioning for decency.
When they got into the car, he reached into his jacket and pulled out the same rider.
“You forgot to sign this.”
Giulietta took the paper, glanced at it, and folded it once. “I’ll have Sofia review it.”
His jaw tightened. “Do you need your lawyer to breathe too?”
She turned toward the window so he wouldn’t see the steel in her eyes. “No. Only to protect what belongs to my son.”
For a second, something ugly flashed across Preston’s face. Then he smiled again.
That was when Giulietta knew this wedding could not simply be canceled.

It had to be finished differently.
The Hales needed to expose themselves where everyone could see.
