Chapter 11 - The Contract Before the Ring
Officer Grant opened the door and accepted the envelope after verifying the courier’s identity.
It was addressed to Ethan.
The return name belonged to a law firm representing Daniel Cross’s company.
Ethan refused to open it.
Detective Morales obtained his permission only after explaining that the envelope might contain evidence connected to an active threat.
Inside was a copy of a personal guarantee.
Ethan had signed it fourteen months earlier.
Four weeks before he proposed to Ava.
The guarantee stated that if Ethan’s development debt remained unpaid, he would surrender specific future marital assets.
Ava’s trust was not named directly.
But attached to the contract was a financial profile describing her inheritance, salary and expected access to family property.
“You gave him information about me before we were engaged,” Ava said.
Ethan’s face twisted.
“I was desperate.”
“You planned the proposal around my money.”
“No. I loved you before any of this.”
“Then why did Daniel have a report on my assets?”
Ethan stared at the floor.
Margaret answered.
“Because Daniel demanded proof that Ethan had a way out.”
Ava nodded slowly.
“And I was the proof.”
Ethan stood.
“I never intended to hurt you.”
“You monitored my accounts.”
“I thought we would combine them.”
“You forged an application using our baby.”
“My mother handled that.”
“You blocked the door.”
His mouth closed.
That was the truth he could not place on anyone else.
Detective Morales removed another document.
It contained a typed wedding schedule.
Beside the ceremony date was a note:
Trust access expected within 72 hours of marriage.
The writing was blurred in photographs, but the original document was clear to everyone in the room.
Ava’s engagement had been timed like a bank transfer.
She removed her ring.
Ethan stared at it.
“Ava, don’t.”
She placed it on top of the contract.
The small diamond made almost no sound.
Still, Ethan flinched as though it had shattered the table.
“This wedding is over.”
Margaret began crying.
Not for Ava.
Not for the baby.
For the canceled ballroom, the guests and the public humiliation she had feared more than prison.
Ethan reached toward the ring.
Detective Morales stopped him.
“It may be evidence.”
Even the symbol of their engagement no longer belonged to him.
Then the detective’s phone rang.
Daniel Cross had been located.
But he was not running.
