Chapter 1 - The Kick That Changed Everything

Ava Reynolds drove her heel into Margaret Parker’s upper thigh.
The older woman stumbled backward with a strangled gasp, her silver blouse twisting beneath her as she crashed into the cream armchair.
Ethan threw his arms wide.
“What the hell are you doing?”
Ava planted her bare foot on the polished floor and pulled her purse tightly against her four-month-pregnant belly.
Her heart hammered, but her voice came out cold.
“Move away from me.”
Ten minutes earlier, Ethan had locked the front door.
Five minutes earlier, Margaret had demanded Ava’s ATM card.
And thirty seconds earlier, Margaret had tried to rip the purse from Ava’s shoulder while Ethan blocked the only exit.
Now Ethan stepped forward and grabbed for Ava’s arm.
She caught his wrist with both hands and twisted downward.
Not enough to injure him.
Enough to make him release her.
“You’re hurting me,” he snapped.
Ava stared into the face of the man she was supposed to marry in twelve days.
“You locked a pregnant woman inside this house.”
Margaret clutched the chair, breathing hard.
“Stop pretending you’re a victim. We only need the card for one afternoon.”
Wedding invoices covered the coffee table behind her.
Flowers.
Catering.
A luxury string quartet.
Charges Ava had never approved.
Ethan moved back in front of the deadbolt.
“Mom is trying to fix the mess you created.”
“I didn’t create a mess.”
“You froze the wedding account.”
“Because forty-two thousand dollars disappeared from it.”
Silence swallowed the room.
Margaret’s eyes narrowed.
“You agreed to pay.”
“I agreed to twelve thousand. Not forty-two.”
Her future mother-in-law straightened slowly.
Then she extended one trembling hand toward Ava’s purse.
“Give me the card.”
Ava didn’t move.
Her left hand slid over the side of her belly.
The baby kicked.
A sharp, unmistakable flutter beneath her palm.
For half a second, fear almost broke through her control.
Then she looked at Ethan.
He had seen her flinch.
He had seen her protect their child.
There was no concern in his face.
Only irritation.
That was the moment Ava understood the truth.
Margaret was not controlling Ethan.
Ethan had chosen this.

And whatever they had done with her money, they were willing to frighten her unborn child to hide it.
👉 The baby’s movement revealed something Ava had refused to believe about the man blocking the door.
