Chapter 9 - The Men Who Came at Midnight

Ethan lowered his voice.
“Mom, stop.”
Margaret laughed once, without humor.
“You think silence will save you now?”
Detective Morales warned her, “You should consider waiting for counsel.”
But Margaret was no longer calculating.
She was unraveling.
“They came to this house,” she said. “Two men. Midnight. They showed me photographs of Ethan leaving work, Ethan at the gym and Ava outside her obstetrician’s office.”
Ava’s blood turned cold.
“When?”
“Three weeks ago.”
The same week the credit line was funded.
Ethan stared at Margaret.
“You told me they only threatened the company.”
“I lied so you wouldn’t panic.”
Ava stepped forward.
“They photographed me?”
Margaret’s eyes shifted toward her belly.
“And your child.”
Officer Grant immediately radioed for an additional security assessment.
Ava looked at Ethan.
“Did you know?”
“No.”
This time, she believed he had not known that detail.
But it did not help him.
His fraud had brought dangerous people close to her child.
“You should have told me everything when the debt began,” she said.
“I thought I could fix it.”
“You kept saying that while stealing more.”
Ethan’s eyes filled, but Ava felt no comfort in his tears.
They were not tears for her.
They were tears for the life he was losing.
Margaret sank back into the chair.
“The lender said the wedding had to happen. They believed Ava’s trust would cover the debt.”
Detective Morales asked, “Who arranged the lender?”
Margaret stared at the floor.
“Ethan’s business partner.”
Ava frowned.
“Daniel Cross?”
Ethan turned sharply.
Daniel had been the best man.
He had chosen the bachelor-party location.
He had recommended nearly every expensive vendor.
And he had personally introduced Ethan to the failed land project.
Ava remembered Daniel joking at their engagement dinner.
You’re finally marrying smart, Parker.
At the time, everyone laughed.
Now the sentence felt like a confession.
Detective Morales checked her phone again.
“We have been investigating Daniel Cross for investment fraud.”
Ethan’s mouth opened.
“You knew?”
“We suspected. Your accounts may connect him to multiple victims.”
Ava looked at the invoices.
One vendor logo appeared repeatedly.
Cross Luxury Events.
Daniel had not only encouraged the fraud.
He had been watching every dollar move through the wedding.
Then Ava’s phone vibrated inside her purse.
A new voicemail had arrived.
