Chapter 12 - The Ballroom Meeting
Police did not allow Ava to go to the hotel.
At first, she argued.
Then the baby moved again, and she understood that courage did not require reckless exposure.
She agreed to be taken to a secure medical facility for evaluation.
Rosa went with her.
Before leaving, Ava watched Ethan and Margaret being separated for formal questioning.
Neither was handcuffed yet.
That bothered her.
Detective Morales noticed.
“Financial cases take time,” she said. “But the unlawful restraint and coercion are separate matters.”
“Will they walk away?”
“No.”
The certainty in her voice steadied Ava.
At the hospital, a physician checked the baby’s heartbeat.
Strong.
Regular.
Safe.
Ava closed her eyes as relief moved through her entire body.
Rosa sat nearby.
“I should have warned you earlier,” she said.
“You were afraid.”
“I saw them changing invoices for months. Mrs. Parker said she would report my immigration papers as false.”
“Are they?”
“No. But she knew my sister’s application was still pending. I thought she could ruin everything.”
Ava took Rosa’s hand.
“You helped me today.”
“I waited too long.”
“You spoke when it mattered.”
Hours later, Detective Morales arrived with news.
Daniel had offered to cooperate.
“He says Ethan and Margaret acted without his approval,” she explained.
Ava gave a tired laugh.
“Of course he does.”
“He brought ledgers, recordings and copies of messages.”
“To protect himself.”
“Yes.”
“Will it work?”
“Not the way he hopes.”
The evidence showed Daniel had designed the lending scheme and used Ethan to attract investors.
Margaret had created fake invoices and shell companies.
Ethan had cultivated romantic and business relationships with women who had money.
Each believed the others would take the greatest risk.
Now each was blaming the rest.
But one recording was especially important.
Daniel had secretly recorded a meeting inside the Parker home two months earlier.
In it, Ethan discussed delaying the wedding only if Ava transferred part of her trust before the ceremony.
When Margaret objected, Ethan said:
“She won’t leave. She’s pregnant.”
Ava stared at the detective.
The sentence hurt more than the locked door.
He had mistaken her love for captivity.
Then Morales added, “The recording also explains why the ATM card mattered today.”
The forty-two thousand dollars was not for vendors.
It was a test payment.
