Chapter 2 - The Man She No Longer Recognized

Ethan rubbed his wrist and glared at Ava.

“You’re making this uglier than it needs to be.”

Ava almost laughed.

He had said those exact words two nights earlier when she discovered the missing money.

At first, the withdrawals had looked like wedding expenses.

Eight hundred dollars to a florist.

Twenty-three hundred to a hotel.

Five thousand to a company called Parker Event Holdings.

But Parker Event Holdings had no website, no office and no employees.

It had one registered owner.

Margaret Parker.

When Ava confronted Ethan, he claimed his mother had negotiated vendor discounts through her company.

Then Ava called the vendors.

They had never heard of it.

That morning, Ava froze the shared wedding account and moved the remaining money into an individual account Ethan could not access.

She had expected anger.

She had not expected a trap.

Margaret had called her in tears, claiming Ethan had suffered a panic attack.

Ava drove to the Parker home because, despite everything, she still loved him.

The moment she entered, Ethan locked the deadbolt.

Margaret stopped crying.

Then the questions began.

Where had Ava moved the money?

Which bank?

What was the PIN?

When Ava refused to answer, Margaret reached for her purse.

Now, standing in the same beautiful room where they had held their engagement dinner, Ava finally saw the house for what it was.

Not elegant.

Not warm.

A stage built to hide desperation.

Ethan stepped closer.

“Give her the card. She’ll pay the vendors, and then we’ll sit down like adults.”

“You stole from me.”

“It wasn’t stealing. We’re getting married.”

“Not anymore.”

His expression changed.

The anger vanished.

For one stunned second, Ethan looked like a frightened child.

Then his face hardened.

“You don’t mean that.”

“I do.”

Margaret released the chair and stood upright.

“You’re not canceling anything.”

Ava turned toward her.

Margaret’s lipstick had smeared at one corner, but her voice remained venomously calm.

“Do you have any idea what people in Charlotte will say if you humiliate this family?”

Ava tightened her grip on the purse.

“I’m more interested in what the police will say.”

Ethan’s eyes flicked toward his mother.

It was quick.

Almost invisible.

But Ava caught it.

And Margaret did too.

For the first time since Ava entered the house, neither of them looked angry.

They looked afraid.

👉 One mention of the police exposed a fear far larger than an unpaid wedding bill.
