The clinic initially refused to release anything.
Then investigators obtained a warrant.
The file contained Claire’s name.
Her date of birth.
Her old address.
But the photograph attached to the intake form was not Claire.
It was Vanessa.
Claire felt sick.
“What was she doing?”
The answer was stranger than anyone expected.
Vanessa had undergone genetic screening.
Not fertility treatment.
She used Claire’s identity because she wanted the results hidden from insurance and family records.
The screening showed Vanessa carried a hereditary cardiac mutation.
One that could affect children.
Walter stared.
“Why hide that?”

“She was preparing evidence against me.”
David nodded.

If Vanessa later challenged Claire’s fitness as Lily’s guardian, she could point to a supposedly undisclosed genetic condition.
A medical lie.

Walter looked devastated.
“She planned all of this.”

“I know.”
“Why?”
He finally answered honestly.
“Because after Susan died, Vanessa was all I had left.”

“You had Ethan.”

“I know.”
“You had Lily.”
He looked away.
“I know.”
Walter had spent decades defining family by fear of losing it.

he failed the people still standing beside him.
Vanessa’s defense began collapsing.

Her attorney contacted Claire privately.
Vanessa wanted to speak with her.

Claire refused.
Until the attorney said:
“She says there is one thing Ethan never told you.”
Claire almost laughed.
“I’m done with her games.”
The attorney lowered his voice.
“She says it concerns what happened the morning Lily was born.”
Claire froze.
