Chapter 12 - The Trial

The trial began ten months later.
Lily was almost two and a half.
She never entered the courtroom.
Claire refused.
The prosecution started with money.
Fake vendors.
Shell companies.
Forged invoices.
Then came Ethan.
Marcus Reed testified.
He described the truck.
The payment.
Vanessa’s order to scare Ethan.
Then prosecutors played Vanessa’s call after the crash.
Marcus had secretly recorded it.
His voice shook:
“He fell.”
Vanessa answered:
“Then leave.”
Two words.
That was all.
Claire closed her eyes.
Walter cried openly.
Then came Lily.
The forged travel consent.
The ticket to Montreal.
The chain.
The porch.
Walter testified.
He admitted everything.
“I knew Vanessa had restrained Lily.”
The prosecutor asked:
“Why didn’t you release her?”
Walter swallowed.
“I was afraid of what Vanessa would expose about the company.”
“Was Lily in danger?”
“Yes.”
“And you still waited?”
“Yes.”
Walter looked at Claire.
“I failed her.”
The defense attacked him.
Called him weak.
Complicit.
Self-serving.
Walter agreed with most of it.
That made him difficult to discredit.
Then the jury saw the backyard security footage.
Vanessa wrapping the chain over Lily’s coat.
Securing the lock.
Walter arguing with her.
Vanessa going inside.
Walter remaining outside.
Then Walter tossing the bread.
A juror looked away.
Claire watched Walter’s face as he saw himself.
He seemed older.
Smaller.
The prosecution asked:
“Why did you throw the bread?”
Walter answered:
“I wanted Claire to blame me.”
“Why?”
“Because I thought if she believed I was the threat, she would take Lily and run instead of confronting Vanessa.”
The prosecutor paused.
“Why didn’t you simply unlock the child?”
Walter closed his eyes.
“Because I was a coward.”
No excuse.
No defense.
Then Ethan’s letter was introduced.
His warning about Vanessa.
His prediction that Walter would hesitate.
The courtroom went silent as David read:
Do not mistake his hesitation for innocence.
Walter lowered his head.
Ethan had understood him completely.
After four weeks, both sides rested.
The jury deliberated.
Claire sat outside holding Ethan’s wedding ring in her palm.
Then the courtroom doors opened.
