Chapter 8 - Ethan’s Warning

Ethan’s letter was six pages long.

Claire read every word twice.

He apologized for keeping the corporate investigation from her.

Not because he distrusted her.

Because Claire had just given birth.

Lily had colic.

Claire was exhausted.

Ethan believed he could finish the audit quietly.

I thought protecting you meant carrying this alone.

I was wrong.

Claire wiped her face.

Then came the warning.

If Vanessa learns the trust gives you Lily’s voting authority, she will come after your fitness as a mother before she comes after the shares.

Claire stopped.

Vanessa’s forged consent forms.

The planned abduction.

The restraints.

All of it had been predicted.

Ethan continued.

Walter will hesitate.

He loves the company too much.

Do not mistake his hesitation for innocence.

Claire looked across the room at Walter.

He had not read the letter.

She handed it to him.

Walter read those lines.

His face collapsed.

“He knew.”

“Yes.”

“He knew I’d fail him.”

Claire’s voice hardened.

“And you did.”

Walter sat down.

“I loved Ethan.”

“Love without courage didn’t protect him.”

Walter flinched.

But he didn’t argue.

Then he told Claire something he had hidden from investigators.

The night before Ethan died, Ethan and Vanessa had a massive argument at the office.

Walter heard part of it.

Ethan threatened to call federal investigators.

Vanessa said:

“If you burn this company down, I’ll make sure Lily never gets a piece of it.”

Ethan answered:

“Touch my daughter and you’ll lose everything.”

Claire went cold.

“Why didn’t you tell police?”

Walter stared at the floor.

“I told myself it was just siblings fighting.”

“No.”

“You told yourself whatever let you sleep.”

“Yes.”

That afternoon Detective Monroe returned.

Financial investigators had traced the shell-company truck involved in Ethan’s accident.

The driver was alive.

His name was Marcus Reed.

He had been living in Arizona under another name.

And when police contacted him—

he immediately asked for immunity.

Claire knew what that meant.

“He has something to say.”

Monroe nodded.

“He says the truck losing control was not an accident.”

Claire stopped breathing.

“Did Vanessa order it?”

“He says she ordered him to frighten Ethan.”

Claire’s eyes closed.

Again.

The same excuse.

Frighten him.

Pressure him.

Just enough violence to force obedience.

But fear had consequences.

And Ethan had died.

👉 The man who drove the truck was finally talking—and his testimony would determine whether Vanessa was merely a thief and kidnapper, or responsible for her own brother’s death.
