Chapter 6 - The Ticket to Montreal
The ticket was for Montreal.
One adult.
One infant.
Passenger names:
Vanessa Cole.
Lily Parker.
Claire felt physically sick.
“She was going to take my daughter out of the country?”
Detective Monroe nodded.
“There’s more.”
Inside Vanessa’s car police found a notarized letter claiming Claire had authorized international travel.
Claire’s signature was forged.
So was a temporary medical-consent form.
And a document stating Lily would remain with Vanessa “for family rehabilitation.”
Claire laughed once.
A broken sound.
“She planned this.”
David examined the papers.
“This is not something she printed this morning.”
The notary stamp belonged to a suspended notary Vanessa had used in company transactions.
The plan went back weeks.
Walter sat with his hands clasped.
“I didn’t know about the ticket.”
Claire turned on him.
“But you knew enough.”
“Yes.”
“You knew she was dangerous.”
Walter lowered his head.
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you call me?”
“Because if Vanessa went down, the company might go with her.”
Claire stared at him.
“My daughter was worth less than your company?”
“No.”
“That’s exactly what you decided.”
Walter had no answer.
Police searched Vanessa’s home.
They found copies of Ethan’s audit notes.
Most had pages removed.
Then they found a shredded memorandum.
Forensics reconstructed enough to read:
V.C. approved duplicate vendor invoices.
V.C.
Vanessa Cole.
The missing company money had flowed through vendors that did not exist.
Eleven million dollars.
But that wasn’t the worst part.
One shell company had purchased a vehicle.
A black SUV.
Three months before Ethan died.
Detective Monroe looked at Claire.
“Do you remember what happened at Ethan’s work site?”
Claire nodded.
“A materials truck lost control.”
It struck temporary scaffolding.
Ethan fell.
The truck driver disappeared before police could interview him.
The company that owned the truck?
One of Vanessa’s shell vendors.
Claire’s stomach dropped.
“No.”
“We’re not saying she killed him.”
“Not yet,” David added.
“But you’re investigating it.”
“Yes.”
Police arrested Vanessa on kidnapping-related charges, forgery, unlawful restraint, and child endangerment while the financial investigation expanded.
As officers led her away, Vanessa looked at Claire.
“You have no idea what Ethan did.”
Claire stepped closer.
“What does that mean?”
Vanessa smiled.
“He wasn’t protecting you.”
Claire’s face changed.
“He was protecting Lily from you.”
Walter shouted:
“Vanessa!”
But she was already being taken away.
Claire stood frozen.
David looked angry.
“She’s lying.”
Walter did not look so certain.

And that frightened Claire more than Vanessa’s words.
