Chapter 5 - The Last Week of Ethan’s Life
David unlocked Lily.
The moment the chain fell away, Claire picked her up.
Lily buried her face against Claire’s neck.
Police arrived minutes later.
Vanessa was separated from everyone.
Walter cooperated.
For once.
Claire sat inside the dining room with Lily asleep against her chest while David explained the final week of Ethan’s life.
Parker Development had been expanding fast.
Too fast.
Ethan handled engineering.
Vanessa handled finance.
Walter remained CEO but increasingly relied on both children.
Then Ethan found a discrepancy.
Two million dollars missing from a land-development account.
Then five.
Then eleven.
The transfers went through shell companies.
“Ethan thought Vanessa was involved?”
David nodded.
“He thought someone in finance was.”
“Did he confront her?”
“Yes.”
“What happened?”
“She denied everything.”
Then Ethan created the trust.
Not because he expected to die.
Because he realized company assets could be frozen if fraud became public.
He wanted Lily protected.
He transferred his shares into a trust with strict rules.
Neither Walter nor Vanessa could sell them without Claire’s consent.
And one more clause mattered.
If Ethan died under suspicious circumstances before the audit was complete, his trustee had authority to release his private financial records to law enforcement.
Claire felt cold.
“Who was the trustee?”
David looked at her.
“You.”
Claire stared.
“I didn’t know.”
“You weren’t supposed to unless the clause activated.”
“Did it?”
“Yes.”
Claire looked toward Walter.
“Then why didn’t anyone tell me?”
Walter answered.
“Because Vanessa found out first.”
David’s expression tightened.
After Ethan’s death, Vanessa convinced Walter the investigation would destroy Parker Development.
Hundreds of employees.
Bank loans.
Projects.
Pensions.
Everything.
She claimed Ethan had misunderstood normal transfers.
Walter believed her.
Or wanted to.
He told David that Claire wanted nothing to do with the company.
He buried the trust paperwork.
Then Vanessa began pressuring him to repurchase Lily’s shares.
Walter resisted.
At first.
Until three days earlier.
Vanessa discovered David had located Claire’s new address.
She panicked.
Walter admitted:
“She said if you met David, everything would come out.”
Claire’s voice was flat.
“So she chained my daughter outside.”
Walter looked sick.
“She told me she was only going to frighten you into signing.”
“And you stood there.”
“Yes.”
“You threw bread at Lily.”
Walter’s eyes filled.
“I wanted you to think I was the one responsible.”
Claire stared.
“Why?”
“So you’d take Lily and hate me.”
Walter’s voice broke.
“Not look inside the house.”
Claire realized he had been trying to draw the blame onto himself.
Cowardly.
Cruel.
But deliberate.
Then Detective Monroe entered.
“We found something in Vanessa’s car.”
Claire looked up.
“What?”
“A second set of chains.”
And a one-way plane ticket.
