Chapter 2 - The Woman Behind the Door

The door opened three inches.
Claire moved in front of Lily.
Walter whispered:
“Don’t.”
A woman stepped outside.
She was in her late thirties.
Blonde.
Elegant.
Wearing a gray sweater and black pants.
Claire knew her immediately.
“Vanessa?”
Walter closed his eyes.
Vanessa Cole was Claire’s late husband Ethan’s older sister.
Lily’s aunt.
At least technically.
Claire had not seen her since Ethan’s funeral eleven months earlier.
Vanessa looked at Lily.
Then at Claire.
“You came early.”
Claire’s blood went cold.
“Did you lock my daughter to that post?”
Vanessa smiled faintly.
“She wasn’t going anywhere.”
Claire lunged toward her.
Walter grabbed Claire’s arm.
“Claire!”
“LET GO OF ME!”
“She has the key.”
Claire stopped.
Vanessa lifted a small brass key between two fingers.
Claire stared.
“Unlock her.”
“No.”
Walter snapped:
“Vanessa.”
She turned on him.
“You said you could handle this.”
“I said I would talk to Claire.”
“You said Lily would be gone before tonight.”
Claire slowly looked at Walter.
“Gone?”
Walter looked sick.
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
“Stop acting confused.”
Claire moved closer to Lily.
“No one is taking my daughter anywhere.”
Vanessa stepped down from the porch.
“She isn’t your daughter alone.”
Claire almost laughed.
“I gave birth to her.”
“That’s not what I meant.”
Walter spoke sharply.
“Enough.”
Vanessa ignored him.
“You don’t even know what Ethan did before he died.”
Claire’s expression changed.
“Don’t use my husband to justify this.”
Vanessa smiled.
“I’m not.”
She looked at Lily.
“I’m using his will.”
Claire went still.
Ethan had no will.
At least, that was what Walter had told her after the accident.
Walter looked at Vanessa with naked panic.
“You promised you wouldn’t tell her like this.”
Claire turned.
“Tell me what?”
Vanessa reached into her sweater pocket.
She pulled out a folded document.
“Ethan left everything to Lily.”
Claire stared.
Vanessa’s smile disappeared.
