Chapter 1 - The Call From the Floor

Ethan Caldwell’s hand struck Emily before she could reach the front door.

The slap turned her head so violently that blonde hair whipped across her eyes.

Her hip crashed into the wicker Easter basket beside her.

Colorful plastic eggs, wrapped candy, purple ribbons, and artificial grass scattered across the pale rug as Emily fell hard onto her shoulder.

“You’re not leaving,” Ethan said.

The words were colder than the blow.

Emily remained conscious, but the room tilted around her.

Warm Easter sunlight poured through the mansion’s tall windows. Crystal chandeliers glittered above cream marble columns. Somewhere beyond the living room, music from the family gathering continued as though nothing had happened.

Ethan’s mother, Margaret, stood near a column in her lavender dress.

She held a champagne glass with both hands.

She had watched her son strike his wife.

She did nothing.

Emily pushed one trembling palm against the rug.

Pain shot through her shoulder.

Then she saw it.

Her dark smartphone lay face down near the edge of the carpet, six feet away.

Ethan followed her gaze.

At first, he believed she was only trying to crawl away from him.

“Please…” Emily whispered. “Don’t.”

She dragged herself through the spilled Easter decorations.

A plastic egg rolled beneath her fingers.

Ethan’s expression changed when he realized what she wanted.

He lunged toward the phone.

Emily reached it first.

She hooked two fingers around the edge, pulled it to her chest, and rolled partly onto her side.

“Give me that.”

Emily shielded the phone beneath her body.

Her fingers shook so badly that she almost pressed the wrong contact.

Then the call connected.

She lifted the phone to her ear.

“Dad…”

Ethan froze.

Margaret’s champagne glass began trembling.

Emily looked directly at her husband.

Fear remained in her eyes, but something stronger was rising beneath it.

“He hit me again.”

The call went silent for half a second.

Then Richard Hayes spoke in a voice Emily had not heard since childhood.

“Lock yourself in a room. I’m coming.”

👉 Ethan believed the call was only a frightened daughter asking for help, but Richard already knew exactly what his son-in-law had been hiding.
