Chapter 10 - The Man Outside the Window
Richard installed additional security around the farm.
Captain Bennett placed a patrol unit nearby.
Emily hated the feeling of being watched, even by people protecting her.
Ethan had already turned safety into a cage.
She refused to let fear make another home feel like one.
The photographs from Grant’s bag revealed that he had followed Emily for weeks before Easter.
He knew her schedule.
He knew when Richard left the farm.
He knew which windows belonged to her bedroom.
Investigators discovered that Grant had withdrawn two hundred thousand dollars in cash before disappearing.
He also had access to forged identification.
Rebecca believed he intended to leave the country.
Emily studied the photographs.
One image seemed different.
It showed Margaret leaving the mansion late at night and meeting someone beside a parked car.
The man’s face was partly hidden.
Margaret recognized the coat.
“Daniel.”
Her younger son was alive.
He had been in Nashville before Easter.
Rebecca traced Daniel Caldwell to a veterans’ housing organization in Memphis.
Richard drove Margaret there.
Emily chose not to go.
The reunion belonged to them.
Daniel agreed to speak only after learning Ethan had been arrested.
He had spent eighteen years believing Margaret chose Ethan over him.
In many ways, she had.
Margaret did not ask for immediate forgiveness.
She told him the truth.
“I failed you because admitting what Ethan was would have forced me to admit what I had done.”
Daniel gave her a small flash drive.
He had returned to Nashville after Olivia contacted him.
Together, they had been collecting evidence.
Daniel was the person who photographed Grant near the farmhouse.
He had tried to warn Emily anonymously, but Grant discovered him.
The flash drive contained the location of three additional storage units.
Federal agents raided them.
They found computers, investor records, falsified contracts, and a locked metal case containing cash and passports.
One passport showed Grant under another name.
His planned departure was less than twenty-four hours away.
Agents moved to arrest him at a private airfield outside Nashville.
But Grant never arrived.
Instead, Emily received a call from an unknown number.
Grant’s voice came through calmly.
“You have something that belongs to me.”
Emily looked at the police officer stationed outside.
“What?”
“The original recording from Ethan’s office.”
“You mean the proof that you stole millions?”
Grant laughed softly.
