Chapter 3 - What Happened Before Easter

Emily had not always been afraid of Ethan.

When they first met, he was charming without seeming arrogant.

He remembered small details.

He opened doors.

He spoke gently around her father.

He told Emily that her independence was what attracted him most.

The first change happened after their wedding.

Ethan began asking where she went.

Who called her.

Why she needed separate bank accounts.

He framed every question as concern.

Then he began criticizing her clothing.

Her friends.

Her work as an interior designer.

“You don’t need clients anymore,” he told her. “I provide everything.”

Emily resisted.

Ethan apologized.

He sent flowers to her studio.

For several months, things seemed normal again.

Then she discovered that he had withdrawn money from their joint account without telling her.

When she confronted him, he punched the wall beside her head.

He never touched her that night.

He cried afterward.

He said he had been under pressure.

Emily believed him because she wanted the man she married to return.

The first physical injury came three months later.

Ethan grabbed her upper arm during an argument and squeezed until his fingers left marks.

Margaret saw the bruise the next morning.

Emily lied.

“I walked into a cabinet.”

Margaret looked at her for a long time.

Then she nodded.

That silence taught Ethan something dangerous.

His mother would protect him.

After that, the violence became calculated.

Never in front of strangers.

Never where a dress could not hide it.

Never severe enough, he believed, to send Emily to the police.

The bruise on her forehead came one week before Easter.

Ethan shoved her during an argument over a credit-card statement.

Emily struck the edge of a bedroom door.

He told her to say she had slipped in the shower.

This time, Emily took a photograph.

She sent it to a hidden email account.

Then she began recording dates.

Times.

Threats.

She did not know exactly what she would do with the evidence.

She only knew she needed proof that her memory was not betraying her.

On Easter morning, Emily finally decided to leave.

She packed a small bag and placed it inside her car.

But Ethan found the spare key missing.

He confronted her in the living room.

Margaret entered just as he blocked the front door.

Emily reached for her phone.

Then Ethan struck her.

Inside the locked study, Emily opened the hidden email account.

There were forty-three photographs.

Seventeen audio recordings.
