Chapter 9 - The Night His Father Died
Thomas Caldwell died twelve years earlier after falling from a second-floor balcony.
Police ruled it an accident.
He had been drinking.
The balcony railing was under repair.
Margaret had accepted the explanation because Ethan said he found his father moments after the fall.
But Olivia’s archive contained surveillance footage from inside the house.
The video did not show the fall itself.
It showed the argument leading up to it.
Thomas confronted Ethan over missing company money.
Ethan denied everything.
Then Thomas threatened to contact Daniel and restore his inheritance.
Ethan followed his father toward the balcony.
The audio ended after Thomas said:
“You destroyed your brother. I won’t let you destroy this family too.”
Three minutes later, Ethan returned alone.
His shirt cuff was torn.
He removed the security drive from the home system.
He believed it was the only copy.
But Thomas had recently connected the cameras to a remote backup account.
Olivia found the backup years later while reviewing company servers.
Margaret watched the footage in Rebecca’s office.
Her body seemed to collapse inward.
“I defended him,” she whispered.
Richard sat across from her.
“You did not know everything.”
“I knew enough to question him.”
She looked at Emily.
“And I chose not to.”
Emily did not comfort her.
Not yet.
Compassion did not require pretending the damage had not happened.
Police reopened Thomas Caldwell’s death investigation.
Ethan was moved from the county jail to a secure interview facility.
When detectives showed him a still image from the video, he requested an attorney.
Grant Mercer disappeared that same evening.
Federal agents froze several business accounts.
News vans gathered outside the mansion.
Emily refused to return there.
She stayed at Richard’s farm in the room she had slept in as a teenager.
For three nights, she woke believing Ethan was standing beside the bed.
On the fourth night, someone entered the barn.
Richard heard the side door open.
He took a flashlight and found a man crouched near Emily’s car.
The intruder fled across the field.
But he left behind a gasoline container and a cloth bag.
Inside the bag were copies of Emily’s medical records and photographs taken through the farmhouse windows.
Grant Mercer was no longer only hiding.
