Chapter 7 - The Brother Nobody Mentioned
Emily had heard Ethan mention a younger brother only once.
His name was Daniel Caldwell.
Whenever she asked what happened to him, Ethan said Daniel had abandoned the family.
Margaret refused to discuss him.
Now, as Ethan stood in handcuffs, he smiled at his mother.
“Go ahead. Tell Emily why Daniel disappeared.”
Margaret’s hands shook.
Richard moved closer to his daughter.
Captain Bennett told Ethan to remain silent.
But the damage was done.
Emily looked at Margaret.
“What is he talking about?”
Margaret sat on the beige sofa.
Eighteen years earlier, Daniel had discovered Ethan stealing money from their father’s company.
Daniel threatened to tell their parents.
Ethan retaliated by planting cash and medication in Daniel’s car.
Then Ethan told Margaret that Daniel had developed a drug problem.
Their father believed him.
Daniel was expelled from college and cut off financially.
Margaret had eventually discovered inconsistencies.
But by then, Daniel had disappeared.
“You knew Ethan framed him?” Emily asked.
Margaret wiped tears from her face.
“I suspected it.”
“Did you contact Daniel?”
“I wrote letters. They came back unopened.”
Ethan laughed.
“He didn’t want you.”
Margaret looked at him.
For the first time, there was no affection in her face.
“You changed the address.”
His smile faded.
Margaret understood.
Ethan had intercepted the letters.
He had ensured his brother remained isolated.
The same method he later used on Emily.
Richard asked, “Do you know where Daniel is now?”
Margaret shook her head.
Rebecca opened her laptop.
“I can find out.”
Ethan was taken outside.
As the patrol car pulled away, Emily expected relief.
Instead, she felt hollow.
The mansion was quiet.
Easter candy remained scattered across the rug.
A purple ribbon was caught beneath the heel of Margaret’s shoe.
The beautiful room suddenly looked like a stage after the audience had left.
Rebecca examined Emily’s recordings.
The audio involving Grant Mercer was serious.
But she warned them that Ethan’s business fraud could reach beyond Tennessee.
“We need complete financial records,” she said.
Margaret looked toward Ethan’s locked office.
“He keeps a second laptop in the wall safe.”
Emily stared at her.
“You know the combination?”
Margaret nodded.
“It’s Daniel’s birthday.”
They opened the safe.
Inside was a laptop, several passports, and a sealed envelope addressed to Emily.
She opened it.
The first line read:
