Chapter 11 - The Voice Inside the Box

The chairman unlocked the cedar box.
Inside were letters, photographs, a small cassette recorder, and a sealed legal document.
Katelyn reached toward the recorder.
The chairman blocked her.
“This evidence must be reviewed privately.”
Damian placed his hand on the table.
“No.”
The room went silent.
He did not shout.
He did not threaten.
He simply looked at the council members one by one.
“You hid my father’s amendment. You monitored Katelyn’s pregnancy. You sent men to follow her.”
The chairman’s eyes narrowed.
“Be careful.”
Damian leaned forward.
“You should have been careful.”
Marcus connected the old recorder to a digital speaker.
Katelyn pressed play.
Her mother’s voice filled the room.
“My name is Eleanor Blackwood Hayes. If this recording is being heard, Vincent has either lost control or died.”
Katelyn closed her eyes.
She had not heard that voice in sixteen years.
Eleanor continued.
“My brother forged psychiatric evaluations, bribed physicians, and attempted to place me under permanent guardianship. His goal was control of the Founders Trust.”
The chairman shifted.
Several council members looked at one another.
“I escaped with proof,” Eleanor said. “But I stayed silent because Vincent threatened my daughter.”
Katelyn’s hand moved over her belly.
The recording continued.
“If Katelyn is ever brought before this council, know this: she owes you nothing. The trust belongs to her by blood, but her life belongs only to her.”
Damian looked at Katelyn.
She could not look back.
Her mother had protected her until the end.
Then Eleanor named the chairman.
Arthur Crane.
The father of Elliot Crane.
The man now sitting at the head of the table.
“You helped Vincent falsify my records,” Eleanor said. “You destroyed my reputation and profited from my disappearance.”
Arthur’s face became rigid.
“This recording proves nothing.”
Katelyn opened the sealed legal document.
Inside was a sworn affidavit from the physician Vincent had bribed.
Original evaluations were attached.
So were bank payments.
Dates.
Signatures.
Everything.
Arthur stood.
“This meeting is over.”
Damian remained seated.
“No. Your control is over.”
Natalia suddenly spoke from near the door.
“There is another document.”
Every face turned.
She walked toward the table.
“The one proving Katelyn’s current child cannot inherit.”
Katelyn’s blood chilled.
Natalia placed a sealed paternity report beside the cedar box.
Damian looked at her.
“Where did you get that?”
“The council ordered it.”
Katelyn stared at the envelope.
No one had taken her blood.
No one had legally tested the baby.

But the report claimed Damian was excluded as the father.
👉 The paternity report looked official—until Katelyn recognized the doctor’s signature from the clinic letter.
